M53-Dev: Kiosk app StratosMedia downloading content through a proxy DNS server gets nothing(?) |
|||||
Issue descriptionVersion: M53-dev, platform 8530.11.0, multiple chrome devices OS: chromeOS 53.0.2785.13 This problem arises when executing the Kiosk App Compatibility test case 1.4.15 Enterprise: Content can be download through a Proxy Server (URL: https://testtracker.googleplex.com/efforts/testcase/detail/6272374) What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Set up an organization unit in Cpanel with the following characteristics: Device Management > Network > Ethernet Make sure only one ethernet entry exists, and give it these properties: Name: proxy_nossl Authentication type: None Proxy Settings: Manual Proxy Configuration HTTP proxy host: 108.59.86.3, Port 8888 [unchecked] Use this proxy server for all protocols Secure HTTP proxy host: 108.59.86.3, Port 8888 FTP proxy host: ftp.proxy.com, Port 21 SOCKS host: SOCKS5, Port 1080 No proxy for: [leave blank] Restrict access to this Ethernet network by platform: Only check the Chromebooks box. Apply network: by device Then click the APPLY button. (2) Navigate in Cpanel to: Device Management > Chrome Management > Device Settings then select the OU you just created the ethernet entry for. Under Kiosk Settings: Kiosk Apps > Manage Kiosk Applications Click on Chrome Web Store, search for app id "alhlkpgheiefedomljbenmkpconkffhk" (the StratosMedia app). Add that app to your kiosk list. Click "Save" tp exit from app mgmt. Click SAVE to apply the Kiosk Settings change. You can have the app auto-launched if you want. (3) Boot your client device and enterprise enroll it. (4) In Cpanel, assign the device to the OU with the proxy ethernet. (5) Wait a couple of minutes, or reboot the device to get the StratosMedia app installed. (6) Launch the StratosMedia App. When it asks you to register, you can enter any name, and the Key is "RMRTEE-LT27HA-HU37TY-6JWCC5". Click the "Register" button. What is the expected output? The app should display multiple "panes" on the screen, with advertisements in one, news stories in another, weather reports, etc. What do you see instead? The screen is pitch black. No error message is shown, nor any hint that something is wrong. The StratosMedia app behaves correctly when it has a direct internet connection, and in a PAC environment (Proxy Auto Configuration). Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

Other apps which require network access also die, typically with an error like "x.y.org took too long to respond". The IP address 108.59.86.3 pings, so it is alive. Attempting to find the proxy server admin to double-check my cpanel proxy ethernet config.

Krishna Rao Gavini gave me a tip about the "wget" utility for fetching a URL with a variety of magic options, like "use this proxy server IP:port", and it works for simple URL's like "google.com": wget google.com -e use_proxy=yes -e http_proxy=108.59.86.3:8888 So 108.59.86.3 seems to be functioning as a proxy fine. I'll try to determine the URL's that StratosMedia and other failing apps are trying to access and see what wget reports about them.

Well, this is wacky. I moved my zako device into the proxy server OU (crosprqa4.com domain, OU=Special Cases > Proxy Server Tests), rebooted the device, and Stratos Media displayed the blank screen like before. Krishna did a "wget google.com etc.etc..." from my workstation using the designated proxy server, which came back with expected results. I rebooted my zako to select a new kiosk app, and... It worked! Rebooted to run StratosMedia app again, and ... It worked! I think we have a new debugging tip: "Let Krishna look at it." Re-prioritizing this issue to '3' for now, but I'd like to keep it open until I can figure out why StratosMedia wasn't working through a proxy server at first, and why it suddenly started working.
