Chromebook Pixel Fails to extend display to HDMI monitor

Reported by nicholas...@gmail.com, Jul 15 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 8172.62.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/51.0.2704.106 Safari/537.36
Platform: 8172.62.0 (Official Build) stable-channel samus

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Connect USB-C to HDMI adapter
2. Connect HDMI cable between adapter and display
3.

What is the expected behavior?
I expect the monitor to display a second screen either extended or mirrored depending on settings

What went wrong?
- Chromebook notification says it is extending display to the monitor name
- The display reads no signal(some monitors wake from sleep mode and read no signal and some do not wake by themselves at all)
- notification saying the same extending display message continues to pop up again every 20 seconds or so with increasing frequency(monitors that do wake up continue to rewake but still read no signal)
- display errors start to occur in the chromebooks own monitor after a couple minutes of the notification continuing to popup again and again(see attached picture).

Did this work before? Yes about two weeks ago, then I started experiencing problems

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 51.0.2704.106 Channel: stable
OS Version: 8172.62.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

I have tried two different usb-c to HDMI adapters. My usb-c to Ethernet seems to be working fine(I expected better performance but it does allow me to connect to the internet). This problems seems to have gotten progressively worse. It started out with the monitor being able to display the extended screen every once in a while, but it would cut out briefly(may be a hardware failure). Then it started out cutting out and not restoring itself. Now it just will not display anything at all. I have tried both usb-c port with the same result. I have also tried flipping the connector which also did not make a difference. The internet functionality works fine on the dell adapter that does usb-c to HDMI and usb-c to internet.
