same symptoms as  issue 623373 :

$  git clone https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/tools/build build

Username for 'https://chromium.googlesource.com': 
Password for 'https://@chromium.googlesource.com': 
fatal: Authentication failed

should not ask for creds for public repo

Re-deployed this. This host it was on was oversubscribed anyways. Hopefully this should take care of it.
