Hangouts extension no longer opens correctly starting from 53.0.2783.4

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Open hangouts extension
2.

What is the expected result?

See first screenshot (Capture.PNG)

What happens instead of that?

Hangouts now opens in a separate window in the middle of the page instead of locking to the bottom right corner of the screen. (See second screenshot)

This also appears to affect the linux build. On upgrading from verion 53.0.2774.3-1 to 53.0.2783.2-1 (both of these are the versions of the .deb from the official repo).

(for me at least) this is the extension available from:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog
