per site Gesture requirement for media playback

Reported by legendm...@gmail.com, Jul 3 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/51.0.2704.106 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Click a video link while holding Ctrl

What is the expected behavior?
Video starts playing in background

What went wrong?
Video does not autoplay until the tab gets into foreground

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 51.0.2704.106 Channel: stable
OS Version: Ubuntu 16.04
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

While I see the need for "Gesture requirement for media playback", a whitelist feature implemented with site permissions would be very helpful.

In general web browsing media should not start autoplay in background. But when the user is browsing a media website, autoplay should be the expected/desired behavior and there should be a way for users to whitelist these sites.

This way everyone is happy. People can take advantage of "Gesture requirement for media playback" while not having to switch tabs on certain websites for media to start playing.

Able to reproduce the issue on win8.1, linux and mac chrome version 51.0.2704.106 and canary 54.0.2787.0 - Holding Ctrl and clicking a video link opens the video in new tab but the video is not played until the tab is focused.

This can be seen from M47 47.0.2526.106 to latest canary

Confirming the issue so that it gets addressed. Please let me know if further bisect is needed on the same.

Working fine in firefox browser.

I think this is by design feature. The video is holding of playing until the video tab is in foreground.
Dale, can you confirm?

Yeah, this is working as intended.
The bug is about adding a whitelist features through permissions because plenty of people are annoyed by this enhancement.

If you search for "per site Gesture requirement for media playback" in Google, plenty of people are demanding the feature noted in this bug/unhappy with the default gesture requirement enhancement
