Play store on ChromeOS reports "GMS services unavailable" on login

Reported by kenneth....@gmail.com, Jun 17 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 8459.0.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2768.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Start US ASUS Chromebook Flip
2. Dev channel, enable Android apps
3. Launch Play store
4. Login

What is the expected behavior?
It would login and show the play store

What went wrong?
the error "GMS services unavailable" appears

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 53.0.2768.0  Channel: dev
OS Version: 8459.0.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

I was having the same issue, I was able to login using a HotSpot, however I switched back to my WiFi and gave me a connection error, it seems something is blocking the PlayStore or in this case the Google Mobile Services (GMS) I would like to know if I need to white-list something in my network.

I think that version had an issue with network and DNS update on android side.
Could you try with a new version that is pushed yesterday and clear profile to retry?
I have found that Android apps (including Play Store) on Asus Flip will not connect to the internet when parental controls are enabled on my Netgear R7000 router. However internet access is fine when using Chrome OS on the same Asus Flip.

If I disable parental controls, then internet access is restored to the Android environment. The parental controls make use of OpenDNS servers and I'm guessing that the Android environment on the Asus Flip is using other hard-wired DNS servers - but I could be wrong.
@uekawa

I wiped the device (ESC+F3+POWER), the devices is running the latest dev version and the same issue is happening, using the hotspot is the only workaround that I have found.

Find screenshots below, please let me know if you need logs or anything else.

What make is your wifi router and are you using parental controls or fixed DNS servers in the wifi settings?

There was a bug about DNS configuration not propagating to Android side and I believe there was a fix.
So if you still have issues, it might have not made 8481.0.0 yet, or it might be a new problem.

In my case, the network has a proxy but they have whitelisted all the URLs related to Google's products, however I saw in the forums people from UK using BT broadband have this issue as well, https://goo.gl/0IsF2E.

@uekawa
As you can see on the screenshot the Chromebook is running 8481.0.0 so perhaps is something else, I also checked the DNS and events on chrome://net-internals and it shows an error when trying to connect via UDP to this IP 2001:4860:4860::8888 (Public DNS IPv6). I tried with Google's DNS on my WiFi but the issue Persists.

Let me know if you need screenshots of this.
could you file feedback report (alt-shift-i) too ? that will help.

DNS issue is tracked internally as b/29505836 and I think it's not fixed yet.

Will do, thank you for your time.
Hi, I'm one of those guys in the UK who complained about this problem last week in the above mentioned product forum. I'm STILL getting the same error message on my Flip when trying to access the App Store (GMS services unavailable). The only way I can access the Sore is by tethering my Flip to my mobile phone. PLEASE can someone shed some light on this. Thank you. :)
@uekawa
Any updates on b/29505836 ??
Status: Fixed (was: Unconfirmed)
b/29505836 is fixed and first push that contained the fix was pushed as 8530.13.0 on 14 July.
There's probably other causes of GMS services unavailable other than this, but let me close this issue about the network configuration for now.

If the affected users are reporting the same issue how could we close this bug. Do you need more info? Is there any other bug that we can track? Is this a duplicate?

jgodinez@,
This bug was marked as fixed because the fix in b/29505836 is expected to solve the error for at least some users. If you still experience errors, I recommend to file a new crbug for issue management purposes.
