Poor audio quality with Sony BT headphones on M53 Dev

Project Member Reported by dgreid@chromium.org, Jun 17 2016

Issue description

Version: 53.0.2764.0

Reported by a reddit user here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/4ocr1p/bluetooth_audio_finally_started_working_clearly/

Audio regression on 53 vs 52 and earlier 53 dev releases.

Assign to me since I have the headphones at my desk.

Cc: kathrelk...@chromium.org
Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphone + Asus Flip.

Can't move away more than 18 inches free from my Asus Flip without sound dropping out - even turning my head left so the left earpiece is no longer in line of sight drops the audio. Also, shortly after streaming starts, Wifi drops, reconnects, drops, repeat.

Thanks for the info. I'll try on my Minnie too, they were working well on Samus, so might be board specific.
Update to Comment #2 - have gone back to stable and have the *same* symptoms.

Comment 5 by jus...@kelly.org.au, Jun 23 2016

update - have updated the flip to v53.0.02773.0 dev and bt audio with the sony headphones 'seems' better but no where near as good as when plugged in

sounds like its $2 speaker - it works, just really bad

Reproduced on my minnie with these headphones. Samus didn't have the issue.

hychao, is it stuck in headset mode instead of A2DP?

Yes this is the same symptom as issue 543444 . Looks like this can be reproduced on peach_pi and minnie.

I just purchased:Sony MDRZX330BT/B Bluetooth Stereo Headset
Paired with Chromebook Pixel CB001
Chrome OS version 53

Good:
When I initially add the bluetooth device, the audio sounds great.
When I power the headset off, the Chromebook switches to built-in speakers.

Bad:
When I power the headset back on, the audio goes back to the headset, but audio quality is terrible. It sounds "like tin cans" also mentioned in this bug:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=576868
The only way to get the audio back to good quality is to remove the device from Chrome settings and pair it again.

Comment 9 by avallone@google.com, Aug 13 2016

Also, not sure if it's related, but the audio has a noticeable delay (even once first paired). Watching this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_PbyRpKrRk

The audio is about 166.6 ms late.

From the view of bluetooth, it is a legitimate scenario that a device got connected for profile X but failed to connected profile Y. Because at least one profile, X for example, is connected, user has no chance or way to reconnect profile Y specifically.
And this is our case here that HFP connect success but A2DP fail, causing bad user experience because they don't aware of the detail.

Currently we have a mechanism in CRAS to control this complex profile status. After HFP/HSP connected, a timer waits 5 seconds to see if A2DP connects successfully, and then creates the audio input/output node. I should have this behavior modified so that if A2DP connection is likely to fail, don't create audio nodes for HFP/HSP alone.

Bluetooth Fail

It only works if:

1. Turn on BT headphones FIRST
2. Start playing music

It fails every time:

1. While playing music > turn off BT headphones
2. Music changes to internal speakers
4. Turn on BT headphones
5. Music is garbled and after a while it disconnects
6. Output does not change to internal speakers

feedback sent 5:53pm EDT Aug 22, 2016

Bluetooth Fail #2

1. BT on, output BT >switch to internal speakers
2. Turn everything off
3. play app > music playing
4. Turn on BT headphones
5. Notice BT device in settings
6. Notice output does not change to BT headphone but works great when manually selected

Added observation after I sent the feedback:

When the Chromebook tries to connect to the BT headphones, it stops the playback in the music app. You can see a stutter start in the slider at the same time a garbled sound is heard in the headphones > stops/no sound > starts/garbled sound.

If you sit through this long enough, at some point the connection is made permanently but the sound will garble intermittently and is never as good as when:

1. Turn on BT headphones FIRST
2. Start playing music

this problem should have gotten better since fixing issue 579371
And here is another feedback from my Samus when trying to play to the Sony MDR-ZX77-BN headphones.

The player hung reliably whenever I connected them.

THese may require new bugs, but I've finally been able to try this code commit on Canary.
Using Version 54.0.2831.0 canary, Samus, LG Platinum
1. It technically connects, but I think it's using the phone, not A2DP channel--the audio-quality is very low-quality and intolerable.
2. When selecting the headset via the bluetooth search list in status bar:
a. It's not possible to select the device using ENTER or SEARCH+SPACEBAR (cvox-click)
b. The device selection only occurred with SPACEBAR, which I tried out of randomness
