Bold text doesn't display correctly

Reported by starbeam...@gmail.com, Jun 4 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2743.24 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://gmail.com/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open a web page with bold text
2.
3.

What is the expected behavior?
The text is bold

What went wrong?
The text doesn't display as bold.

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes In the last update I think

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 52.0.2743.24 Channel: beta
OS Version: Linux Snowflake 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

This happens with loads of websites.

As a test case, go to this url:

data:text/html,<html contenteditable><style>body{font-family:sans-serif}</style></html>

And press CTRL+B, and then type some text. It doesn't appear bold. If, however, you visit this url:

data:text/html,<html contenteditable></html>

And perform the same test again, It should work. The problem appear to only be with sans-serif.

Also, this did actually work before. I haven't changed anything on my end (apart from messing with my sound system, which shouldn't affect chrome at all).

Other affected websites include github (example: issue titles, e.g. https://github.com/sbrl/Pepperminty-Wiki/issues).

That is seriously odd. I've tried it with a fresh profile (no extensions, no changes to any settings), and it still didn't work. Here's a better test case that doesn't require you to type anything yourself:

data:text/html,<html style=font-family:sans-serif><p>Normal Text</p><p><b>Bold Text</b></p>

Try changing your or reinstalling your default sans-serif font. Sounds like it might have gotten corrupted.
@#6 Umm how do I do that? I have no idea what my default sans-serif font is.

Depends on the linux distro but usually under system settings there is a way to change the default fonts.
@#9 I'm using Ubuntu Desktop 15.10. I have not changed or touched any of the default fonts. I can't find anything in the system-settings, but I know that my fonts are located under '/usr/share/fonts'. The only font related change I've made is copy a couple of fonts into '/usr/share/fonts/truetype'. That change was over 6 months ago, and I only started having this problem last week.

If it's of any help, here's a link to the output of 'ls -R /usr/share/fonts': http://hastebin.com/aheyihoxuj.avrasm

In addition I've tried with a clean profile and resetting all the chrome://flags to default, and it still doesn't work.

Interestingly, if you set the font to "Ubuntu, sans-serif", it works.

**Update:** I went ahead and installed the `ttf-mscorefonts-installer` package via apt-get, and this seems t o have fixed my issue. apparently copying a few font files over from my Windows installation isn't good enough anymore since something is chrome has changed :/

If I could close my own bug I would, but apparently that's too much to ask for.
