REGRESSION: extension badge text looks sometimes ugly

Reported by geki...@gmail.com, Jun 3 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2756.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. install adblock extension and block something
2. go to a page where something is blocked
3. look at the badge

What is the expected behavior?
always nice looking text

What went wrong?
sometimes the text looks ugly (e.g. 3 or 8)

Did this work before? Yes looked better with the dev before

Chrome version: 53.0.2756.0 Channel: dev
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

could the "fix" for Issue 613576 be the cause?!

you must view the png's in the original size ... like you see it in the browser
uh, define ugly? This looks normal to me (I assume the extension author specified a dark grey badge color).

on this page the badge looks ok but if you click on the png to see the real (smaller) size, the text look different!
Components: Platform>Extensions Blink>Forms>Text
Labels: M-53
Status: Untriaged (was: Unconfirmed)
Able to reproduce the issue on Windows 7 using 53.0.2756.0, latest canary 53.0.2762.0, stable 51.0.2704.84 as per steps in comment #0.

'Adblock extension' is supported from chrome version 31.0.1609.0 and text at the badge looks ugly from that version. This is non regression issue.
Hence, marking it as untriaged.

Could anyone from dev team look into this issue please.

Note:Unable to reproduce the issue on Mac 10.11.5, Ubuntu 14.04.

Assigning to estade@ since he's looking into the similar issue in 613576, though I'm not sure I see what the problem is. Do you have an example of non "ugly" text? Is this just again that the text is small as a result of the md change?

Comment 7 by geki...@gmail.com, Jun 13 2016

As i noted before for me it looks only ugly if i see the png in the original small size. Other Numbers, like 1, 2 or 7 look a lot better for me (in every size)

we're not doing anything special with font rendering here. This is how the 3 and 8 render at that size using pango and your system font.

not good for me, but i think you can't help.

i think you will get more bugs like this, because i have the problem on win7 and win10 with a standard installation ... nothing done with fonts
