Tab in file editor sometimes inserts wrong number of spaces

Reported by toont...@gmail.com, Jun 3 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/50.0.2661.102 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Select some text
2. Type tab
3.

What is the expected behavior?
Insert 4 spaces on each line (4 is what I set in the customisation panel).

What went wrong?
Works about 90% of the time. 10% of the time I get 8 spaces. I'm unable to see a pattern in when it inserts too many spaces.

Did this work before? No

Chrome version: 50.0.2661.102  Channel: n/a
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0

Do you get 8 spaces as well if you just hit "tab" without text selection?

I just found out that if the cursor is at column zero or the end of the line I get 8 spaces but otherwise 4. I used 54.0.2792.0 canary.

Can you provide a snippet of code which reproes the issue? It would help a lot.

OK.

0. Set tab to be 4 spaces

1. Create a file sample.html with contents:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>
Tab with cursor at column zero adds 8 spaces
Tab before the b in before adds 4 space
</body>
</html>

2. Navigate to that page in the Dev Tools sources tab.

3. Map the folder to the local file system

4. Place the cursor before the word Tab and press the Tab key -- I see 8 spaces

5. Place the cursor before the word 'before' and I see 4 spaces

I tried this with the file called sample.txt with identical contents and I didn't see the same behaviour. This behaviour has also been observed with .js extension for other files but harder to reproduce.

Use 54.0.2794 canary

I'm on Chrome 54.0.2795.0 Linux, and still fail to reproduce.
Can you make a screenshot of your sources settings? (like mine)

Also, any change you would be able to do a screencast? Chances are there's a minor detail which cause a bug.

Here it is. Thanks for looking into this.

Remember I'm on Windows 7.

Still, no success reproducing this. Could you make a screencast? It would help a lot!

Now I can no longer reproduce this. Perhaps it was fixed or the problem is very intermittent. Tested with Version 54.0.2809.0 canary

Thanks, won't fix then for now.
