Can you confirm the chromebook recognized that it was in tablet mode (i.e. the overview button appeared in the shelf)? I'm unable to reproduce on 52.0.2743.32 (Official Build) dev (32-bit) platform 8350.21.1 (Official Build) dev-channel veyron_minnie. If it does not recognize it's in touchview, can you check whether the accelerometer is updating at https://jsfiddle.net/api/mdn/ ? It is known that at 90 degrees (portrait orientation) the chromebook cannot tell when it has opened into tablet mode because it detects the lid angle based on accelerometers in the keyboard and screen.
