Chrome 51 crashes on Desmos calculator when VoiceOver is Running

Reported by stephen....@gmail.com, Jun 2 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. In Chrome, visit www.desmos.com/calculator.
2. Enable VoiceOver with CMD+F5.

What is the expected behavior?
The list of expressions gains focus, and calculator can be used.

What went wrong?
The browser crashes.

Crashed report ID:

How much crashed? Whole browser

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 51.0.2704.79 m Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.11.5
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0

This works beautifully in Chrome 50. Regressed in 51.

I have prepared a reduced demonstration of this issue, and published it at https://github.com/jwmerrill/chrome-51-voiceover-crash

The problem seems to be a bad interaction between Chrome, VoiceOver, and a certain subsetted version of the Symbola font.

To observe the problem, you can either clone the repo above and run it locally, or just observe it over the web at

works: https://rawgit.com/jwmerrill/chrome-51-voiceover-crash/4822707b37b05cea452d35f7b6c5563659318f3a/works.html

In the "crashes.html" version, activate OS X VoiceOver (cmd-F5), and then focus the "y=x" input. Doing this will crash the tab. Reloading the tab will crash the whole browser.

The "works.html" version is a similar setup that does not demonstrate the crash. The only difference here is that it pulls in a different, non-subsetted version of the Symbola font.
