Chrome browser does not display HTTP authentication realm

Reported by ad...@triumf.ca, May 24 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : 50.0.2661.89 (Android)
URLs (if applicable) : lists.triumf.ca
Other browsers tested:

Firefox 38.7.0 (Linux) OK
Firefox 46.0.1 (Android) OK
Chrome 25.0.1364.97 (Linux) OK
Lynx 2.8.6 (Linux) OK
Elinks 0.12pre5 (Linux) OK
Safari 534.30 (Android) OK
Konqueror/4.3 (Linux) OK
Firefox 43.0.1 (Windows) OK
Internet Explorer 11.0.9600 (Windows) OK
Opera 12.6 (Linux) OK
w3m 0.5.2-19 (Linux) OK
Chrome 50.0.2661.102 (Windows) Bad

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Visit URL protected with HTTP Basic Authentication

What is the expected result?
Browser generates a dialog including the WWW-Authenticate string from the server, such as 'A username and password are being requested by http://lists.triumf.ca. The site says: "Prove you are not a robot. Enter Username 39272"', or possibly "Enter your Student ID" etc. as set by the website operator.

What happens instead?
Chrome generates a dialog with no realm information, so the user is unable to login.

I have implemented a different anti-abuse mechanism within Mailman at lists.triumf.ca, so that URL is no longer valid as a test.
https://alastor.daviel.org/ldap/ works, though the cert has expired
