YouTube - no video since last Chromium update

Issue description

Chrome Version: Chromium 50.0.2661.102 Ubuntu 14.04
Is this the most recent version: Yes
OS + version: Xubuntu 14.04, Linux Kernel 3.13.0-86, English UI
CPU architecture (32-bit / 64-bit): 64-bit (Intel D2500HN board, 2GB RAM)
Window manager: Chromium default (Classic)
URLs (if relevant): https://www.youtube.com
Behavior in Linux Firefox 46.0.1:
    YouTube videos play OK
Behavior in Chromium:
    YouTube videos are missing the video portion (audio is OK)
    Problem started immediately after most recent Chromium update
    Problem occurs on all 3 of my PCs (same motherboard & OS on all 3)
Behavior in Windows Chrome (if you have access to it):
    N/A

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Launch Chromium
(2) Load https://www.youtube.com
(3) Double-click on any YouTube video

What is the expected result?
    The selected YouTube audio/video file should play

What happens instead?
    Audio plays, but video doesn't - see attached screenshot

Apparently Chromium has had this problem before - just found this on Google from 2014:

It suggests un-checking "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Chromium Settings.

I tried that and it worked!
