from a separate email thread: it's unclear whether the fix for the s3's hdmi issue is relevant here. in that case, the problem was SurfaceView playback of any sort. Here, it seems like the problem is HDMI only, and SurfaceView plays okay otherwise.

all of those links have spitzer enabled (i think -- the bus ride is bumpy). if so, can one of you start a run without spitzer?

it's possible that it has nothing to do with video playback at all; maybe the thing can't do 60fps with hdmi plugged in.
It may not be easy to turn off spitzer in automation command line. I can manually run with spitzer disabled + HDMI plugged in next Monday.
Caleb, if my understanding is wrong and you can easily schedule automation on S5 with spitzer disabled, please go ahead to do it. Otherwise I'll manually run these tests in lab with HDMI cable plugged in.
It's a one-line code change to run this in the lab. I can show you on Monday.

this issue NOT repro when disable spitzer. see lab result with spitzer disabled here

Frank,

It seems like a reasonable use case for someone to want to use the S5's HDMI output to play video on their TV or something like that. Any update on this?
this bug is still repro on S5 device. It is now repro on all 60fpsH264 or 60fpsVP9 video. Do we have any plan to fix it?
Probably not. Can you check

https://web-animations.github.io/web-animations-demos/#galaxy/

And see if it's smooth on the device? If not we can see if compositor team have any ideas.
dale, I tried the demo site in c#12, it has no problem. This bug only repro on 60fps video. I doubt the animation demo is 60fps.
This issue is consistently repro on galaxy 5 for almost one year. If it's is resolved won't fix, then we may need take some action on test side.
Status: WontFix (was: Assigned)
since we have no clear route to fixing this, closing WontFix.
Support for all
