Chrome unusable when docking and undocking laptop with multiple monitors attached

Project Member Reported by othorsen@google.com, May 20 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : <Copy from: 'about:version'>
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
     Safari: PASS/FAIL (Version)
    Firefox: PASS/FAIL (Version)
         IE: PASS/FAIL (Version)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Open Chrome
(2) Undock laptop
(3) Dock laptop

What is the expected result?
Chrome opens as normal.

What happens instead?
Windows chrome, whenever I undock and redock to multiple monitors, Chrome javascript modals refuse to bring themselves to the forefront in the visible viewpane and refuses to correct itself until I restart Chrome.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

This has been happening for me for years. It drives me nuts and makes using Chrome very hard when I dock and undock often at the office. I'm not yet sure if my computer going into sleep mode has any relationship to the bug.

Please contact aduerr@linkedin.com for more details.

Using Windows 7. This has been happening for me for years on Chrome, so over many, many versions, including the latest. This is an extremely consistent problem for me across multiple Lenovo laptops.

Unable to repro this issue on Windows 7 [Dell - Touchpad, Enterprise SP1, Intel i-7], Windows 8.1 [Lenovo X1 Carbon] & Windows 10 [Pro - Dell Touchpad, Intel i-7] for Google Chrome Stable Version - 51.0.2704.106 & Canary Version - 54.0.2787.0

@aduerr: Could you please perform the steps mentioned beneath and let us know your observations.

1. Update your Google Chrome Stable Version - 51.0.2704.106 & Canary Version - 54.0.2787.0
2. Do not Login with your Credentials.
3. Re-test the same on a clean profile [chrome://settings -> Add Person]

Thank you.
othorsen@ Could you please respond to above comment and update the thread if the issue still persists for you on latest stable. 52.0.2743.116.

Thanks,
Following up on this - please note that I have now received a new Thinkpad
which no longer has the previous generations' docking station, and has been
replaced with a single cable. Since upgrading to this new hardware, I have
not re-encountered this issue. It existed across two previous generations
of Thinkpad, so I am not sure if this issue was related to the hardware in
any way. I'll follow back on this thread in the event I can reproduce the
issue again.

Regards -
-Anthony
