[css-grid] Fragmentation slices a grid row

Project Member Reported by mpalmg...@mozilla.com, May 19 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. load the attached testcase

What is the expected behavior?
The break should occur between the 3rd and 4th row.
In the first column, the blue left/right borders (of the grid container) should extend to the end of the black border (of the grid item), i.e. there should be no spacing at the break.
In the second column, there should be no space above the grid item.

What went wrong?
The break occurs inside the 4th grid row, slicing it and its item. The CSS Grid spec says: "Class A break opportunities occur between rows or columns (whichever is in the appropriate axis)"
https://drafts.csswg.org/css-grid/#pagination
https://www.w3.org/TR/css-break-3/#btw-blocks

which makes it very clear that there are no break opportunities inside tracks, only between them.

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 52.0.2716.0 (Official Build) dev (64-bit) Channel: n/a
OS Version:
Flash Version:

The testcase renders according to spec in Firefox Nightly.

mpalmgren@ - Could you please confirm what's the expected behavior of this issue by providing a snap-shot.

Thanks!

Also, looking at your screenshot it seems you haven't enabled Grid layout
in Chrome. (FYI, I'm implementing CSS Grid in Gecko.)

Thanks for reporting this.

Yeah, fragmentation is still not implemented on Grid Layout, so it's a well-known bug. :-)
I've just report a meta-bug (issue #614667) to track all this once we work on it.

Bulk-adding Hotlist-Interop to bugs filed by other browser vendors based on the summary. Feel free to remove if this issue doesn't actually reflect a difference in behavior between engines.

The whole engine has issues with fragmentation, so this is not a priority for Grid Layout at this point.
