CSS 3 Column bug (overflow: hidden functionality where it shouldn't)

Reported by obr...@gmail.com, May 19 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/50.0.2661.102 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
http://uma-architekten.at/year/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Create a container with CSS3 columns
2. Position an element relative inside the columns
3. Position an element inside the relative positioned element and position that absolute

What is the expected behavior?
The elements display regularly

What went wrong?
The absolute positioned elements are clipped as if there is an overflow: hidden applied to the box. However, applying overflow: visible or any other rule does not fix the problem

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? No

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Able to reproduce the issue on Windows 7 using chrome latest stable M50-50.0.2661.102. Observed the elements are getting overflowed while hovering on the link.

This is a non-regression issue seen from past M35-35.0.1849.0, Hence marking it as untriaged.

No clear test case here, but since it was reported with Chrome 50, it may be a duplicate of bug 527709 .
This issue is still there in 54.0.2840.71. This also breaks box-shadows on items in columns, which is how I found out it exists.

I've attached a testcase. Try all permutation of box-shadow and position:relative on both of the inner divs (try putting position:relative on the second inner div first and watch all shadows magically disappear).
