Chrome is entirely black when switching from a TTY

Version: Version 50.0.2661.102 (64-bit)
OS: Ubuntu 14.04

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Press ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a different TTY
(2) Wait about 5 seconds
(3) Press ctrl-alt-F7 to switch back to Chrome

What is the expected output?
I can see the webpage as I left it

What do you see instead?
Chrome is entirely black.  I need to move the mouse over chrome to get it to render.
