Ubuntu 16.04 Netflix no longer working

Reported by pya...@gmail.com, May 14 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/50.0.2661.102 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
http://netflix.com/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to netflix
2. Try to play movie

What is the expected behavior?
A movie playing

What went wrong?
No movie starts playing and netflix eventually displays an error message: Error Code: M7063-1013

Did this work before? Yes Yesterday on Ubuntu 14.04 same chrome version

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 50.0.2661.102 Channel: stable
OS Version:
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0

chrome://components does not list the Widevine plugin

chrome://plugins does have the Widevine plugin enabled

Netflix support claims this is due to Chrome not supporting Widevine on Linux (it did), but apparently since Ubuntu 16.04 that no longer works.

after apt-get install vlc, it seems to work. Widevine seems to crap out if some codecs are missing, and they're not installed with Widevine, and the error message from Widevine does not seem to indicate that because it had Netflix support confused. Widevine seems to be defective.

So you won't fix that you're shipping a broken plugin?

Comment 4 by pya...@gmail.com, May 24 2016

And also no indication whatsoever to the user as to what's wrong?

Comment 5 by pya...@gmail.com, May 24 2016

That's nice...
