Significant text-entry performance regression

Project Member Reported by sjg@google.com, May 14 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : Version 51.0.2704.36 beta (64-bit)
URLs (if applicable) : gmail, perf tool
Other browsers tested: none
Add OK or FAIL, along with the version, after other browsers where you
have tested this issue:
     Safari:
    Firefox:
         IE:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
[1] Reply to an email with a lot of text (my example has ~600 lines), using 'plain text' entry but it happens in rich text also.

[2] Go to the end of a line somewhere and press return
It takes 13 seconds to respond on my goobuntu laptop!
(e.g. in the screen shot0
It has always been a touch sluggish with very large files (e.g. ~2k+ lines) but this is something else.
It seems to be a significant regression.

What is the expected result?

It should instantly respond.

What happens instead?

It takes 13 seconds before anything happens.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

I mention the perf tool as text entry is extremely slow there also, for anything other than (say) 10 lines of text.

Here's a video. You can hear me tapping the return key and see the long wait. I can repeat this if needed as it happens all the time on my current version.

OK, sorry, ignore that video. Also, it seems to happen when chrome is running for a while. When I start a fresh chrome, it doesn't happen. I'm running about 25 tabs and the machine has 16GB of RAM with nothing running but chrome.

I can do another video if it helps. I've been using Chrome for an hour since a restart, sent about 80 emails, and it's really sluggish again.

Unable to reproduce the issue on Linux 14.04 chrome version 51.0.2704.47 - Tried with gmail and observed that going to end of a line in some reply mail with large content (>600 lines) and pressing enter key there is an immediate response

sjg@, Could you please upgrade to latest beta and replicate the same on a new profile and update the thread.

Hi, do you have a way to simulate chrome usage for a while as per my comment #4? When I start chrome it is fine, but after sending the emails it is really really slow.

I have created a new profile (multi-user profile), and will use it for a while to see if I can repeat it a third time. Assuming this happens, what should I do to help you repeat it?

Is your theory that there is something wrong with my current profile? It is certainly huge:

u -sh Default Profile\ *
3.4G	Default
72M	Profile 1
505M	Profile 2
41M	Profile 3
