Security issue from the browser crashing

Reported by niallnan...@gmail.com, Apr 27 2016

Issue description

VULNERABILITY DETAILS
I've installed many anti-malware protection extensions on my Chrome Browser. About a week ago, my Chrome browser just kept crashing and ads kept popping up like crazy (still continues to happen to this day). I looked at my extensions and all of the extensions were disabled (including my anti-malware extensions). This can be a huge vulnerability issue if people were to have these important extensions disabled without them knowing. If someone were to load confidential documents onto their Google Drive and they trusted Google servers and their extensions to protect their information and then this happens to them, the safety of their documents could be at risk of people spying on their every move.

VERSION
Chrome Version: Chrome version: 50.0.2661.75 + Stable

CRASHES
Type of crash: Entire Chrome browser.
Crash State: Application crash.
Crash ID:

One of these (It freezes so long before saying it's a crash, therefore, to speed up the process of it booting back up, it force it to shut down by using task manager) -

Most crashes aren't listed on here as I've always forced Chrome to shut down as it took too long to figure out the issue. My browser crashes about an average of 4 times a day (doesn't happen with Firefox or Opera). After forcing it to close, I usually have to wait 10 minutes before I can re-open the browser because if you do it earlier than that, it wont open.

can you list the complete directory c:\windows\fonts (that contains all your fonts)? Thanks.

How do I list the complete directory? There are over 500 fonts I believe as I also have Adobe Photoshop installed (there are many fonts included with Photoshop)...

you appear to be suffering from a number of issues including running out of memory, and also Chrome having trouble enumerating all your fonts.

perhaps you could try upgrading to Chrome 64-bit?

I don't think that memory is an issue here as I've still got over 700gb's
of storage in my computer, and today I've deleted Photoshop (using it on
another computer) and yet it still seems to crash. It crashes mainly when I
use YouTube.

Thanks for the update, from the stack trace this issue is reported on chrome version '49.0.2623.110'. I would request you to please try the above issue on chrome stable version '50.0.2661.94' and let us know if the issue still persists.

I really appreciate your help.

Thank you!
I'm surprised this issue wasn't closed by now. What a waste of dev time.

TLDR: End-user issues and not the responsibility of Chromium dev team.

"I've installed many anti-malware protection extensions on my Chrome Browser".

-You have too many extensions and should do a 'clean boot' of Chrome without any extensions then see if your issue persists.

"About a week ago, my Chrome browser just kept crashing and ads kept popping up like crazy (still continues to happen to this day)."

-You failed to list any/all of the extensions you installed.

-Your computer has malware and you need to contact an IRL tech to do a full malware scan on your computer (all of it, not just Chrome) and repair/reinstall if needed.

-Do you have a backup? System Restore? It may be useful to do that if possible but System Restore itself is iffy. You should consider 3rd party imaging software like CloneZilla for 'disaster' scenarios like this.

"I looked at my extensions and all of the extensions were disabled (including my anti-malware extensions)"

-You likely have malware, either in the browser or in the OS or both. You are also using Windows 10 and that OS frequently gets updated and often breaks/uninstalls/disables things that you would otherwise use.

http://betanews.com/2015/11/24/windows-10-uninstalling-user-programs-without-permission/

"If someone were to load confidential documents onto their Google Drive and they trusted Google servers and their extensions to protect their information and then this happens to them, the safety of their documents could be at risk of people spying on their every move. "

-Google Drive is not a proper location to store anything confidential or otherwise. Nobody should trust Google servers with confidential (or higher) information because Google and other tech companies are well-known participants of PRISM and other Patriot-Act govt programs mandated by US law.

-You should never trust an extension to protect your information. The attack surface of a browser is far too large and too riddled with holes (because the modern web still has holes for compatibility/corporate reasons) to be useful from a security standpoint.

-Everything is being spied on (landlines, cell phones, faxes (which are always unencrypted), and so on. If you own a smartphone and haven't enabled 'airplane mode' on it then you are being tracked. If your smartphone has a battery inside then the microphone can remotely record anything (confirmed via analysis of Samsung and Qualcomm firmware on various computing forums).

Continues to crash almost everyday. Forced to use task manager to close the
browser as it would still not respond after 15 mins. Opera works better.
