Google chrome displays squares instead of letters

Reported by sandrokh...@gmail.com, Apr 24 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/50.0.2661.87 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
Google any Georgian letter

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. google any Georgian letters (ქართული)
2. see result (every Georgian letter will be displayed as squares)

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
Google chrome displays Georgian letters as squares. I tried everything: reinstalling chrome and windows, encoding, installed new font packets etc.
Nothing helped. This problem only occurs on Chrome browser. Other browsers and programs display every Georgian font properly.

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes It always worked.

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 50.0.2661.87 Channel: stable
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0

If any, can you provide a list of installed apps and extensions? Even if you keep reinstalling, if you install the same extensions afterwards and an extension is the problem, reinstalling will not have helped.

Do you have any Georgian fonts installed?

Do you use a font manager? If so, try disabling it.

Can you try to create a new clean profile and see if that helps?
1) It is not fonts issue, because other browsers display every Georgian font, but still, I have tried installing new Georgian fonts. Nothing changed.

2) No, I don't use anything like that.

3) I have already tried creating a new clean profile but it didn't help.
I'm seeing the same issue with Georgian fonts after Chrome updated to version 50, Windows 7.
Other browsers and applications can display Georgian fonts. Bookmarks on bookmark bar in Georgian text will display, but everything on the page will be squares.

I agree with Sam.
I forgot to mention that this problem first occurred when I updated Chrome to version 50. Previous versions worked fine.

Thanks. Could you please indicate a specific website that you observe this problem on and what version of windows (including locale) you're using? Will help us track it down.

Thank you for your patience.
This seems to be an issue with Segoe UI font, which is a Standard font in Chrome for Windows. Seems like Windows 7's Segoe UI has trouble displaying Georgian letters. Updating font to Windows 10 version or changing standard font in Chrome to Times New Roman fixes the issue. However, it would be better to set Times New Roman as a default font for Windows 7
Mine was already on Times New Roman, so that doesn't fix the issue. I've tried switching around to different fonts and encodings and nothing fixes it. I've attached a screenshot where you can see Georgian characters in the bookmarks bar and another where you can see that http://google.ge shows squares in place of საქართველო and ქართული

Fix Georgian font selection on Windows 7

Change FontFallbackWin to specify Sylfaen before Segoe UI for Georgian.
The Segoe UI font is present on Windows 7 and therefore matches despite
