Issue description
Device String : Lenovo Tab 2 A7-30F (Mediatek MT8127 SoC, Mali-450 MT GPU)
Android Version : 5.0.1
Kernel Version : 3.10.54
Chrome Version : 49.0.2623.108
URLs (if applicable) : http://www.{wetter,youtube,vimeo}.com/
Other browsers tested:
Firefox: 45.0.2 OK
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Use a pristine install with no user data of application, go to every URL and play a video.
What is the expected result?
Video picture showing.
What happens instead?
Some sites show no video picture like wetter.com (german version) or youtube.com. Sound is playing fine. vimeo.com though works good including video pictures. Firefox is fine with all three except some stuttering.
I have saved two logcat logs. One of wetter.com and one of vimeo.com. The first one uses "MPEG4Extractor", "Mplayer" and "Awesome Player". The second one "MtkOmxCore" and "MediaCodec". Maybe it´s related that both use different media backends? If you have to see these logs, I will upload them and exclude the most verbose parts (WiFi, PowerManager, hwcomposer etc.).
The stock version of Chrome (41) behaves the same. Firefox claims to have no H264 hardware decode acceleration. Unfortunately I cannot disable it in Chrome (#disable-accelerated-video-decode) as it "is not available on your platform" to test what happens, if it´s disabled.

I downloaded one video from youtube and linked it in a short html file with a video tag. This is to exclude any side effects from complex websites.

Firefox is again OK, while Chrome is NOT.
Google Video Player and VLC have no problems, too.
I´m going to perform contemporary some tests with MPEG2 or VP8/9 material as well. Just need some free time to encode it :)

I grabbed some additional formats from one video by using youtube-dl. Two H264 files: High profile has audio whereas main profile is video only. And VP8 besides VP9. The last one is video only as well. I embedded them all in a minimum html page and tested them again in Firefox and Chrome. VLC and the Google Video Player are for the sake of completeness.
Obviously I expect all files to play well ibn Chrome. The others are just for reference. Video only files remain silent as you might have estimated :)
|----- MP4 -----| |-- WEBM --|
H264 Main H264 High VP8 VP9
----------------------------------------------------------
Firefox +++ +++ +++ +++
Chrome --- +-- +-- ---
VLC +++ +++ +++ ---
GVP +++ +++ +++ ---
"+++" is fine, "---" does not work at all
"+--" is audio output only, video is blank
----------------------------------------------------------
Interestingly the mentioned video above from vimeo.com I tested directly in Chrome had identified itself as VP9 codec. As you can see in the debug logs. And played fine. Well, I don´t have to understand that. Maybe it is the container format or decoded in software as fallback? The VP9 from youtube just works with Firefox in any case.
Additionally I attached the (zipped) logcat files.

Well, I just looked closer inside the "Developer Mode" (I guess it's named this way in english; I'm german user) and found an interesting checkbox: "Use NuPlayer instead of AwesomePlayer (experimental)". Hmm, let's give it a try and see what happens to Chrome... Wow, now H264-high is having a video picture. Coincidence? Reboot and test again. Just to be sure. And Chrome does it again. Also in main profile and the VP codecs. wetter.com and youtube.com now play fine. Obviously I don't have longterm experience right now. But this setting seems to fix it :)
