Add test coverage to better detect implicit signalling regression

See  bug 602731  for an issue that went uncaught by the existing implicit signalling test coverage. That bug's fix was urgently needed, so no testing was added immediately when it was fixed. This bug tracks adding such coverage.

At the very least the tests added should be changed to hash tests which would have caught this.
