chrome://crash does not work from NTP

Version: 49.0.2623.105
OS: Android 6.0.1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Open a new tab
(2) Attempt to navigate to chrome://crash

What is the expected output?
An "Aw snap" page.

What do you see instead?
A blank page.

Navigating to the page via some other page works though, e.g. go to chrome://version then chrome://crash.
