I'm assuming this is 670fe928a6784fa6404567a6a4eae0d47b35d3a3 since it adds several pngs to Chrome. nsatgrano, can you confirm?

Yes Nicolas was an intern and has left.

A size increase seems normal when adding png files. Please advice what is unexpected here.

The four png files are <2000 bytes combined. It seems an unlikely candidate for an 800KB size increase.
