My extension has dropped out of the "Social & Communication" Category page

Reported by st3...@gmail.com, Apr 8 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.112 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. visit https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/ext/1-communication
2. look for the FB Purity extension
3. its not there any more

What is the expected behavior?
FB Purity should show up on the "Social & Communication" category page, as that is the Category I have chosen on the Dashboard page for my extension, it used to show up there until about the 25th March. I also have a visual corroboration of this date, as the Stats page on the Dashboard show a massive drop off of the number of impressions that my extension got around that date. Screenshot of stats page: http://i.imgur.com/nqdtOEr.png

I am fully aware that the chrome webstore has a bug where your extension does not show up in the Webstore category listings if you have already installed it, but this is not the case, as I am developing the extension as an unpacked extension, which means it has a different ID to the one listed in the Chrome Webstore, so it should not be affected by this bug, and it wasn't affected up until around the 25th March, which was when i noticed my extension had dropped out of the category page.

What went wrong?
My extension should show in the "Social & Communication" listing page. It used to show there, relatively high up the page, but now it doesn't show up on that page at all.

WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/ext/1-communication

Did this work before? Yes before 25th March

Chrome version: 49.0.2623.112 Channel: stable
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0

Can you please fix this issue?

My extension is still not showing under that category, I have been informed by chrome webstore support that the reason it is being hidden from that category is because it is using Youtube videos in the "Link to a YouTube video" section and that those videos have ads on them. The problem with this is I have no control over whether or not Youtube ads are displayed on youtube videos, also the fact that this behaviour is not documented anywhere, i.e that you should not use Youtube videos even though the webstore dashboard has the ability to add them, unless you want your extension to mysteriously disappear from the category listing with no warning

Please can somebody fix this? either remove the ability to add youtube videos, or disable ads on youtube videos that get shown in the webstore. This doesn't seem like rocket science to me.

My extension has been removed from its category listing page, and the number of views and installs that the extension has received since then has plummeted to approximately a sixth of the original daily rate.

James - Please read the whole ticket. User suggested "either remove the ability to add youtube videos, or disable ads on youtube videos that get shown in the webstore", these look like feature request.

@st333v, is your extension still not showing in the expected category?

Comment 4 by st3...@gmail.com, Oct 28 2016

james, the extension in question was taken down by google, due to a trademark infringement claim from Facebook. Despite me fixing the trademark issue, google will not re-instate the specific extension, they are saying its up to Facebook to give the go ahead whether or not they will allow it back in the webstore, and they are not responding to emails. I do not think this is fair, as there is no trademark infringement any more as i fixed the issue, but Facebook are deliberately not responding to keep it out of the webstore.

In the meantime, i decided i waited long enough, its been over 4 months now, so I have uploaded a new version of the extension. The new version has a similar problem to this issue i reported for the old extension.

The extension is extremely popular, it has over 48,000 users (the original version had over 180,000 users, and they havent all yet transitioned to using the new version yet), it also has around 839 5 star reviews (with an average star rating of 4.99), and yet it appears right at the bottom of the "social & communication" category (just above the extensions that do not have an approved promotional tile)

i cannot understand why this is the case as it is a lot more popular and has more 5 star reviews than the vast majority of extensions that get listed above it in the "Social & Communication" category, it seems someone has added some kind of manual penalty to my extension, could it be facebook's influence? or someone at google just doesnt like me or my extension?

i have opened a new issue for this at https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=659073&can=4&q=&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Stars%20ReleaseBlock%20Component%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified

Hi,
One of the things that can cause extensions to be demoted in store rankings is when the screenshots have video previews with pre-roll ads. Have you tried turning off ads in your video previews?

Comment 8 by st3...@gmail.com, Nov 11 2016

the videos are not under my control, therefore i cannot turn the ads off.

as google owns youtube and the webstore, why dont you just automatically
turn the ads off if its such a problem

this is insane, where is this documented?

i did an experiment and removed the youtube video that was display ads,
but my extension is still listed right at the bottom of the category,
can you please look into this further and help me out here?

why allow youtube videos to be added to extension listings, if you are
then going to penalise the extension for doing just that?

it doesnt make any sense....

@James, i have now removed both videos from the extension listing, so there are now no videos there at all, and yet my 4.98 star extension with over 54,000 users is still listed at the bottom of the "social and communication" category listing way below extensions with a single star and a handful of users, what is going on here? please fix this bug!

Hi there --

The ranking change takes some time, but should be in effect now. Please check again and re-open this bug if you are still experiencing problems.

Regarding your previous question about automatically turning off ads for video previews, the Webstore team is indeed considering a future change to restrict developers from enabling ads in video previews. This is not a trivial change though. If the team decides to implement it, it would likely ship with a new version of the developer dashboard.

Best,
James

the thing is, I did *not* enable ads in video previews. i had no control
over whether or not ads were displayed on the videos,

only google and the video channel owner has the ability to decide
whether or not they have ads on their videos.

well my extension has moved up the category listing, but it still seems
to have some kind of artificially applied penalty as it always stays
around the same place in the category listing, quite far from the top,
whereas fake/scammy extensions

such as "Social Profile view notification"

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/social-profile-view-notif/pegkceflonohbcefcbflfpficfkmpeod

and "Profile Visitors for Facebook"

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/profile-visitors-for-face/ihjbpjahiibmjdlcgodcnmpelpmilamk

are always listed near the top of the listing, and alwyas higher than my
extension, despite my extension having a higher rating, and being a
legitimate extension that actually works and does not mislead its users
