Viewing this CL scrambles my macbook pro external monitor

Project Member Reported by jrobbins@chromium.org, Apr 6 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : 49.0.2623.110 (64-bit)
URLs (if applicable) : https://chromereviews.googleplex.com/395137013/
OS version : 10.11.4
Behavior in Safari 3.x/4.x (if applicable):
Behavior in Firefox 3.x (if applicable):
Behavior in Chrome for Windows:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) View that CL, signed in to a @google.com account, with the polymer Rietveld UI option enabled in the Reiteveld settings. (old Reitveld UI does not trigger it)
(2) Wait. Scrolling with the mouse wheel seems to trigger the failure almost immediately. But, doing nothing will also trigger it.

What is the expected result?
Nothing unusual.

What happens instead?
Screen goes black, flashes on and off. Screen shows random grey and white dots on half. Screen has random diagonal lines. Screen freezes. Any or all of these. Most last about 1 second and then a different effect happens a few seconds later.

It happens only on the external monitor, not on my macbook built-in screen. It only seems to happen when the window is 100% on the external monitor, not when the window spans internal and external display. It happens only when that browser tab is the active tab. Powering the monitor off and on only helps because the window moves to the internal display.

Hardware:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Monitor:
Dell 24-inch from 2007.
DELL 2405FPW Display
24-inch (1200 x 1920)
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics
I am using the monitor as a USB hub for keyboard and mouse.

Correction: powering monitor off and on does nothing. Unplugging it from the laptop helps by moving the window to the internal display.

Also, the monitor is in portrait orientation.

I can't reproduce this. ccameron@, any ideas? Over to you for investigation.
If the entire monitor gets hosed, and not just the Chrome window, then I don't know anything we can do. Sounds like you've got bad hardware.

Also, try "rebooting" the monitor (cut power and re-power-on). I once had a monitor that managed to hose my machine.

Reporter, does this happen if you swap the monitor out for a different one?
I just tried it on a HP Z24i Display and I could not repro the problem.

My Dell 2405FPW is not defective. I use it for everything every day.

I suppose that this issue could be closed if it seems that it is limited to just that specific monitor model which few users probably have now.
Status: WontFix (was: Unconfirmed)
The easiest way to narrow down the source of the problem would be to get a second Dell 2405FPW, and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's a driver bug. If not, it's hardware related [but scoped to OSX drivers].

I don't think there's anything for us to do here unless we start to see more instances of this problem.
Note to self: If I try to repro this again, set the monitor to 1200 x 1920 resolution.
