Unable to update Chrome

Reported by curry...@gmail.com, Apr 6 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/41.0.2272.76 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Attempt to install current 64-bit Enterprise version of Chrome, using MSI as administrator

What is the expected behavior?
Chrome updates.

What went wrong?
Chrome fails to update.

Did this work before? No

Chrome version: 40.0.2214.111m Channel: stable
OS Version: 7
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0

Happens whether I manually run the MSI or try to run a silent scripted install. Current version is 32-bit, trying to switch to 64-bit (yes, this is 64-bit Windows 7). We do have a GPO to disallow automatic updates to Chrome. Any input is appreciated. Log attached.

Also, Event Viewer gives the attached, as does the MSI during a manual install.

Just noticed the newer log seems to be in appdata, so the attached should be more relevant in troubleshooting.

It looks like the failure may be happening in the Google Update installer rather than in Chrome's. Please download Sawbuck from https://github.com/google/sawbuck/releases/latest and follow the directions in https://support.google.com/chrome/contact/unknown_error to capture a log of the installation.

Thanks for the Sawbuck log, it is very helpful. My hypothesis is that Chrome's installer receives an error while writing a resource into a temporary directory (here: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/codesearch#chromium/src/chrome/installer/mini_installer/mini_installer.cc&q=OnResourceFound%20file:%5Esrc/chrome/installer/mini_installer/&sq=package:chromium&l=289&dr=C). The exact reason isn't clear. The most sure-fire way to figure out what the error is would be to capture a log with Process Monitor (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processmonitor.aspx). I believe that the error takes place while the process named chrome_installer.exe is running, so we may have the info we need if you could provide a log that only includes that process. Could you give this a shot?

Hello,

I've attached a log file. The log includes chrome_installer.exe as well as
GoogleUpdate.exe. Let me know if you find anything. Thanks!

Hi. The email attachments didn't come through. Please either attach them to this issue in crbug.com, or send them directly to grt at chromium dot org. Thanks.
