The location bar is 1pt shorter in MD, so that's part of where the space went.

The vertical position is correct if all of the text (in the button and outside of it) is to share the same baseline.

This is how it looks in Incognito.

I revamped tab search as part of MD to be simpler and the size of the chip. I attached the 1x and 2x .svgs. You should be able to switch the color from #5a5a5a to #FFF in incognito after prog rendering.

Let's also reduce the size of the "press | | to search [...]" to 12pt.
Preview and assets attached.

Sounds good.
+shrike It looks like traffic lights bar is translucent according to specs from comment #3.

Tab strip changes don't seem to make the bar translucent. Is there a plan for it? I couldn't find any open bugs about it.

Comment 7 by shrike@chromium.org, Mar 23 2016

The tab strip background (which includes the area behind the traffic lights) is definitely translucent. You have to have Material Design turned on and should place the window in front of a vibrant photo to see it (it can be very subtle).

If you still don't see it please don't add comments to this bug - this bug is not about the tab strip's background.

Filed bug 597453 . Thanks.

No longer sure this is still a problem - moving back to triage.
I still can reproduce it with Chrome Canary 66.0.3330.0 on macOS 10.12.6. It is more noticeable in Incognito. The icon is very close to the Omnibox border.

Please see the screenshot.
