chromium-49.0.2623.75 memory leak with gmail.com

Reported by pachora...@gmail.com, Mar 9 2016

Issue description

(Also the same with Google Chrome precompiled binaries)

Chrome Version : 49.0.2623.75 (Build para desarrolladores) (64 bits)
URLs (if applicable) : https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox
Other browsers tested: Google Chrome, Firefox
Add OK or FAIL, along with the version, after other browsers where you
have tested this issue:
     Safari:
    Firefox: OK
         IE:
Google Chrome: FAIL

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Go to my gmail.com page with the mail list
(2) Leave it open for a long time (from 6 hours to 1 day or similar)

What is the expected result?
It shouldn't keep consuming more and more RAM + Swap until making system unusable

What happens instead?
It starts eating RAM continuously, if I am able to open Chromium resources tool, I see memory is being eaten by the tab showing gmail page

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Do you still see this issue on the latest stable(50.0.2661.94) consistently. Also, please let us know where can I get the (Build para desarrolladores) to test and confirm.

Appreciate your response!

Hi!

I am compiling that newer version right now. At least with older 50.0.2661.75 this was still valid, either with tcmalloc enabled or not.

This builds are those resulting from using our portage building system on Gentoo:
https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/www-client/chromium

Then, I am not sure if I should then upload the resulting precompiled packages to some place

Anyway, the same affects to the Google Chrome precompiled packages from https://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/pool/main/g/...

Thanks

Is there any way to force a limit on the memory used by each tab? Even if that tab will crash? Otherwise chromium/chrome is nearly unusable if I forget to close gmail page :S

I also hit this with Google Drive pages... is there any way to limit the maximum memory taken by chromium process on linux? I prefer browsing dying in that situation instead of it causing all the system to become near unresponsive because of eat eating all memory and later swap

Thanks

Fixed the empty status.
I have this problem with gmail on Chrome Version 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit)

This report and subsequent comments don't mention that the issue is reproducible after disabling all extensions on chrome://extensions page. There are thousands of various extensions, and it's not uncommon for them to have errors that thwart garbage-collection.
