It is not clear to me what the error is here. Is it that the drop-down arrow (^/v) looks a bit weird after the translation?

Yep, I think that's what it is. It changes from a regular drop-down to something that resembles a half of a Y. It's a pretty minor issue so changing priority to 3. Is this just a translate quality issue or something related to the types of bugs kennetht@ identified as related to the code in dom_segment.js (and surrounding) which modifies the dom tree by merging and/or splitting text nodes into "sentence"-shaped strings for translation?

The carrot and inverted carrot for the drop down menu is actually an image and not a text character. See the bottom right corner of:

http://www.yesky.com/TLimages2009/yesky/images/index/index_bg.png?0115

There is a CSS rule which attempts to place the "carrot" using this background image and using background-position-x and background-position-y offsets. This CSS rule does not handle the case where the translated text is longer than the original text. The "Y" that is seen is another section of the background image being shown, which is the start of the "Yesky Download" text in the lower section of the source background image.

By manually editing the translated text to be "National sub-station is a long long string" we see that more of the background image (see the attached image: Yesky menu long translation text.png). Note, the menu carrot is actually still being rendered, but it is mostly obscured by the text.

Manually shortening the translation text shows the "correct" result, as shown in the attached image: Yesky menu short translation text.png

Subsequently, there is no way for Chrome to handle this in a general way and the recommendation is for the site owners to modify their CSS for the menu item to better handle variable-length text.

Marking as won't fix.
