Older version of Google Software Update was not reporting connectivity errors, ending up in wrong "up to date" experience. That said v42 is very old, so the user must have not been able to update for a very long time. This is most likely the reason why the Google Software Update itself is also old on that machine. I would recommend manually downloading the latest version of Chrome from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop To find the exact error with updating, please open the Terminal application, copy/paste the text below as a single line and press enter: ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ksadmin --verbose --list | grep ErrorDomain
