virtual keyboard sometimes deletes the last letter of words even with autocorrect off

Reported by gogg...@idupree.com, Mar 5 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 7647.84.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/48.0.2564.116 Safari/537.36
Platform: 7647.84.0 (Official Build) stable-channel veyron_minnie

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. turn off autocorrect for your virtual keyboard to reduce the number of confounding factors (this step not required)

2. type words in a <textarea> for a while with the virtual keyboard. It seems to happen far more often if I am typing quickly (closer to 50wpm than 10wpm). At the fast speed, somewhere from 1-10% of my words suffer this fate. Several did while writing this bug on a Chromebook Flip. At the slow speed, I am not sure I can reproduce it.

3. notice that the last letter of a word was there for a moment (I think), then gone after you pressed "space"

4. confirm that you were not imagining things by typing "delete" on the virtual keyboard and seeing it cause the missing character to re-appear. (This is the Chrome OS way to undo autocorrects you didn't like.) If you were already in the middle of the next word, press delete until you try to delete the space. If you already finished the next word and typed space again, it is too late for deleting to be able to undo this.

If you (bug fixers) understandably can't type that fast on this touch keyboard, or otherwise can't reproduce it, is there some way I can grant you access to my account's touch keyboard history to help debug this?

What is the expected behavior?
No form of autocorrect should be happening when it is off. And ideally it should not be correcting words to non-words at all.

What went wrong?
Characters were autodeleted.

Did this work before? N/A

(If it helps, I've occasionally seen two letters at once removed this way from the end of a long word.)

Further info: this bug seems *not* to happen in <textarea>s like Slack's chat box that have `autocorrect="off" autocomplete="off"`.

Hi goggles@idupree.com, can you please verify whether this can repro with "Double-space to type period" option disabled? Thanks!

Comment 8 by gogg...@idupree.com, Oct 11 2016

I can still reproduce this after disabling "Double-space to type period".

(I list my today's test method here in case I didn't reload enough things: Tried typing in mytextarea.com while "double-space to type period" is still on. See the effect happen. Turn off "double-space to type period". Reload mytextarea. Switch to another input method and back. Verify that double-space no longer produces a period. Type a bunch. See the effect happen again.)

Version 53.0.2785.144
Platform 8530.93.0 (Official Build) stable-channel veyron_minnie
ARC Version 3301557
Firmware Google_Veyron_Minnie.6588.197.0
Can you please repro this on the latest Canary version (56.0.xxxx.xx)?

If it still repros, can you please capture a screen recording video? It would be very helpful to identify the root cause if I can observe some detailed behaviors.

Thanks!

I can't reproduce it anymore on (I think) versions 54 and later. (Though I haven't been typing on the ChromeOS virtual keyboard as much lately, so there's a chance my recent test missed something.) Feel free, on my part, to close this bug report.
