Error in response to storage.get: TypeError: $ is not a function

Reported by stefan.v...@gmail.com, Mar 4 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.75 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install this Turn Off the Lights Chrome extension
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/turn-off-the-lights/bfbmjmiodbnnpllbbbfblcplfjjepjdn
or from the official website https://www.turnoffthelights.com
2. When you install this extension, you must see a gray lamp button in the omnibox
3. Click right on the gray lamp button, and click "Options". Then in the first "Basics" tab enable the "autoplay" feature in the Turn Off the Lights options page
4. Open this test page:
https://www.turnoffthelights.com/playground/
5. And click on the play button from that HTML5 video player, the page dims automatically.
Click again on pause, it undim the page.

What is the expected behavior?
5. It dims (go to 80% opacity black) the page automatically when you click on the play button of the HTML5 video player.

What went wrong?
5. It doesn't dim the page! But show this error in the console log:
Error in response to storage.get: TypeError: $ is not a function
    at autoplayfunction (chrome-extension://bfbmjmiodbnnpllbbbfblcplfjjepjdn/js/content.js:398:18)
    at Object.callback (chrome-extension://bfbmjmiodbnnpllbbbfblcplfjjepjdn/js/content.js:436:9)
    at chrome-extension://bfbmjmiodbnnpllbbbfblcplfjjepjdn/js/content.js:49:22handler @ VM66 extensions::uncaught_exception_handler:8

This extensions works before in v48 and in Opera build 35.0.2066.92 (Opera extension same code as Chrome extension).
Now in v49 you break the whole code.

WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/turn-off-the-lights/bfbmjmiodbnnpllbbbfblcplfjjepjdn

Did this work before? Yes V48

Chrome version: 49.0.2623.75 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.11.3
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 20.0 r0

Status: WontFix (was: Unconfirmed)
Sounds like a bug in the extension, and appears to be fixed (no longer repros).
