Issue descriptionSteps to reproduce the problem: 1. Visit any site with a theme-color set 2. Toolbar changes color with no option to prevent this What is the expected behavior? Toolbar doesn't change color What went wrong? I consider the theme-color feature to be a bad idea. Ideally I think it should be removed, but failing that a setting provided to allow me to disable it. Here's why - The toolbar area is used by Chrome to report important information about the site I am visiting. * A red or green "https://" in this area gives me information about the security of the site I'm visiting * A dark grey toolbar tells me I am in incognito mode Allowing website owners to modify this area is therefore confusing. The first time I encountered a red theme-color I assumed there was a security issue with the site. Whenever I visit a site with a dark theme-color I think I'm in incognito mode. On a less serious note, allowing website to modify the browser window reminds of the bad old days of status bar messages and strangely coloured scrollbars. Did this work before? N/A Chrome version: 48.0.2564.95 Channel: stable OS Version: 6.0.1 Flash Version: I appreciate this is more of a feature request than a bug, but I was advised to raised this here by the very helpful @ChromiumDev twitter account.

(+ktam@ and yusufo@ as FYI) This feature is considered one of the many app-like capabilities increasingly available to sites (along with things like sending notifications or running fullscreen.) If a site is in incognito mode or has a red lock, the site loses access to a custom theme-header color, but you're right that it doesn't mean the colors don't conflict a bit at times. This feature launched in fall 2014 and we haven't heard a ton of feedback on this front (about it being confusing), but we only recently ported it over to the version of Chrome when "Merge tabs and apps" is off where more people may be exposed to it. I'll mark this as won'tfix for now but continue to keep an eye on things. If we were to do anything we'd determine a way to distinguish colors better rather than add a setting, I'd say. |
