Chrome loses font-weight bold when many text-shadows are applied
Reported by timm...@gmail.com, Aug 13 2010 Back to list
Chrome Version : Mac 5.0.375.125
Other browsers tested:
     Safari 5: OK
  Firefox 3.5: OK

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Add the following styles to some text:

text-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, .55) 1px 1px 1px, rgba(0,0,0, .25) 0 0 1px, rgba(0,0,0, .2) 0 0 12px
font-weight: bold
letter-spacing: .03em

What is the expected result?

A few overlaid shadows on a bold font.

What happens instead?

The bold styling disappears in Chrome, but stays in other browsers that support text-shadow (including Safari 5).

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Is this still a problem for you with the latest Google Chrome Dev-Channel-Build (11.0.696.12 dev).

You can find it here: http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_dev.html?dl=mac

Thanks for your help in advance !

No feedback from the reporter. Issue closed.
This issue is still outstanding.

However, I have a clarification:

In chrome, applying any css text-shadow seems to reduce font-weight by several degrees, not just multiple text-shadows.

example: https://skitch.com/cloudkick/r23kb/font-weight-issue-ff-left-chrome-right

css from example:
h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6{color:#fff;text-shadow:#888 0 0 .1em;font-weight:300;}

mike to triage. (please send back to me if it's not CSS, just remove yourself as owner.)

Attached is an isolation of the issue. "Test 1" is black text only. "Test 2" is black text with a text-shadow of the same color as the background (so, invisible). As Javascript animation toggles between the two, it can be noted that "Test 2" is of slightly lesser weight. on Mac OS 10.6, repros on Chrome 13.0.782.112 but not on FF 3.6.20 nor on Safari 5.0.5 (6533.21.1).

Same problem here on Chrome 14. No bold if you use text-shadow.

Test cases from #1 and #12 now appear identical in Chrome 44 and Firefox 39.0 on Windows 7.
