same problem here.
Ubuntu Linux 10.4
Chromium 6.0.480.0
Chromium: 6.0.480.0 (Developer Build 54251) Ubuntu 10.04
chromium-ffmpeg-extra installed, html5 videos does not work.

But

Google Chrome	5.0.375.125 (Official Build 53311) beta on same machine, video works.
works for me on windows chrome 6.0.472.11 (Official Build 53709) dev
but we just went to new ffmpeg code, so its certainly possible
youtube is mp4 or webm. If you're on chromium, and the video is only in mp4 format, its expected to fail.
The video in http://www.html5video.org/ used to work on chromium its not working since 6.0.475 i think.

On same computer the video works on Google Chrome.
Chromium is giving this error on console
"<source> is not allowed inside <video>. Content ignored."
Ubuntu Linux 10.4
Chromium 6.0.480.0
Same problem.
 Issue 50939 has been merged into this issue.
fta: did some PPAs go out without FFmpeg?

I recall seeing some emails fly by about broken FFmpeg support...
Labels: OS-Linux ffmpeg
There were some ubuntu ffmpeg patching issues recently. I've marked this as linux.

The source uses ogv as a fallback, which should work
<video id="vid1" width="480" height="267"	>
  <source src="http://cdn.kaltura.org/apis/html5lib/kplayer-examples/media/bbb_trailer_iphone.m4v">
  <source src="http://cdn.kaltura.org/apis/html5lib/kplayer-examples/media/bbb400p.ogv" />
</video>

The ogv files works okay for me on Chrome for Mac.

it's broken for me too. that's with 0.5+svn20100611r49485+50002 as 0.6 still doesn't build because of the broken patch stack.

I didn't change anything in my codecs package recently.
I guess i have to bisect that.

Broken patches hm... fbarchard do you know what's up?
with the same codecs package (0.5+svn20100611r49485+50002), i tried to downgrade chromium itself and found out it started to fail somewhere between those two dailies:

6.0.478.0~svn20100728r53895 NOK
6.0.477.0~svn20100727r53742 OK

i have absolutely no packaging change in this interval
wild guess... could it be caused by r53885?

I don't think this is just a Linux bug, I've experienced with Chromium Nightlies on Windows 7 (64-bit) for the last two weeks.

Current Chromium : 6.0.485.0 (54783)
Same behaviour as fta described, it was working with 6.0.477.0~svn20100727r53742, stopped working with 6.0.478.0~svn20100728r53895.

escalating!

fbarchard: can you see if our FFmpeg update broke Chromium somehow? bad FFmpeg DLLs perhaps?
On gentoo, I can't compile chromium (6.0.485.0_p54876) with ffmpeg 0.6. Is it related?

Seems to work in 6.0.472.22 dev on Linux

Not working on 6.0.486.0 (55014) Ubuntu 9.10

http://html5test.com/ gives 0 points for audio and video

@scherkus: the patch causing me troubles is 11_ogg_seek_first_frame.patch

see http://launchpadlibrarian.net/53077582/buildlog_ubuntu-maverick-amd64.chromium-codecs-ffmpeg_0.6%2Bsvn20100730r54360%2B54907-0ubuntu1~ucd1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

iirc, fbarchard removed that patch from the stack as it's obsolete. That's done in r54382 but in trunk, DEPS still has ffmpeg_revision=54360. A bump is needed.

more generally, it would be nice if that patch stack had a kind of "series" file compatible with "quilt" (i.e. a simple text file listing the patches in the right order), allowing packagers to do a simple "quilt push -a" (providing QUILT_PATCHES is properly set) instead of depending on a free form instruction file like README.chromium.

Confirmed:

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
chromium-browser 6.0.486.0~svn20100805r55014-0ubuntu1~ucd1~lucid

Google Chrome does work with html5 video on the same install.

ok, i confirm that when i bump ffmpeg_revision in DEPS to catch the patch clean-up, it builds fine and i'm able to play all the html5 videos. So the fix is trivial.

I can raise this as another ticket, if it hasn't already been done, but audio is similarly broken in Chromium nightly (Ubuntu). I get NaN, where I used to get playing audio.

hope that helps

Everything seems good for me now in 487 as well. OGG and H264 video working fine in Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Haven't tested WebM yet.
Status: Fixed
Fixed in trunk.
Comment 31 by Deleted ...@, Aug 20 2010
h264 videos are not working in gentoo, for beta or dev channel "releases" after version 6.0.472.33, up to and including 6.0.495.1. I've tested non-webm youtube videos as well as html5test.com, which reports no h264 support.

Of note, 6.0.472.33 is the first ebuild where gentoo returned to using the bundled ffmpeg.

I'm new to chromium debug/troublshooting, so please advise how I can be of assistance. :)

It reoccurred (differently) with the last few dev releases *sigh*
I currently have 7.0.522.0 (59180) and when I attempt to play html 5 video it freezes the tab (tested with vimeo and youtube).

I can confirm this (7.0.522.0 (59180) Ubuntu 10.04), although it seems to manifest differently than the last time: you can see the video container, but playing it does not work. Depending on the website, it either freezes the tab, or simply doesn't play the video.
occurs here with recent builds from the ubuntu ppa (9.0.597.16~r68763-0ubuntu1~ucd~dev1~lucid) when running on lucid
