sans-serif "line-height: normal" equivalent to 1.0 instead of ~1.14-1.2

Reported by, Feb 5 2015

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/40.0.2214.94 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Visit w/ current Chrome 40 and other browsers (e.g. Safari or Chromium 35).

What is the expected behavior?
I'd expect line-heights not to change so drastically from release to release. Other browsers seem to set "normal" line-heights to ~1.14 (Firefox) or 1.2 (Safari).

What went wrong?
W/ Chrome 40 on OS X, text using the sans-serif default font (Helvetica) looks rather cramped. Arial looks fine, FWIW ...

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 40.0.2214.94 Channel: stable
