This problem started for me on Windows with version 5.0.396.0. The bookmark manager never displays any entries and merely flashes like it's updating something. It consumes a large amount of CPU. I let it run for an hour hoping it would eventually display something but it never did. Some browser functions are impaired while this is happening, like you can't do an "About Google Chrome". If you close the errant tab, things go back to normal. I have a large amount of bookmarks (around a 1000 or more).

Chromium 6.0.400.0 (Developer Build 46805) Ubuntu WebKit 533.9 V8 2.2.8 User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/6.0.400.0 Safari/533.9 Command Line /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser I am seeing exactly the same behaviour on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit. You click on the bookmark manager and it crashes the new tab it opens, and makes the browser effectively unresponsive until you can kill that tab. Now I have another bookmark extension which is working perfectly, and I'm having to use that to look at my bookmarks. The extension is: Incredible StartPage - Productive Start Page for Chrome! - Version: 0.7.1 A new, customizable start page for Chrome. Easily find your favorite bookmarks and closed tabs. Take notes as you browse. Disable - Uninstall - Options Allow in incognito

It was the past few versions. Turns out entering chrome://bookmarks in the address bar work ok, it's just using the menu that makes it screwy.
,
May 10 2010
I can confirm with my configuration that using the URL chrome://bookmarks it has no problems, but clicking on the menu item causes the problems described above. I think this should now be marked as confirmed, as it is 100% reproducible by several people.
,
May 10 2010
I'm getting a TOT build to see if I can repro this. It sounds like something is going wrong in Browser::ShowSingletonTab
,
May 10 2010
Works on dev builds. I'll get an official build to see if it does something different.
,
May 10 2010
Works on latest nightly as well. We did have some packaging bugs in a few builds so I expect you got unlucky and got a build during that time frame.
,
May 11 2010
Have you tested this with a large number of tabs open and a large number of bookmarks? As mentioned above we both have large amounts of saved bookmarks, which could be a contributing factor.
,
May 11 2010
FWIW, I could reproduce this yesterday with a r46824 binary from the buildbot. Today however, after having added more bookmarks in the interim and restarting etc., the problem is not reproducible anymore.
,
May 12 2010
I have tested this again this morning with this version: Chromium 6.0.401.0 (Developer Build 46998) Ubuntu WebKit 533.9 V8 2.2.9 User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/6.0.401.0 Safari/533.9 Command Line /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser It is exactly the same as it has always been, the tab goes wild when you click on the menu item. Would a list of extensions that I have installed be of any help in diagnosis? Could compiz be a factor in this?
,
May 12 2010
I have just tested this with no extensions enabled, exactly the same.

Still having this issue as of: Chromium 6.0.401.0 (Developer Build 46998) Ubuntu WebKit 533.9 V8 2.2.9 Package version: 6.0.401.0~svn20100512r46998-0ubuntu1~ucd1~lucid About:sync report: Details Authenticated true Last Synced 5 hours ago Server Up true Server Reachable true Server Broken false Notifications Enabled true Notifications Received 0 Notifications Sent 1 Unsynced Count 0 Conflicting Count 0 Syncing false Initial Sync Ended true Syncer Stuck false Updates Available 0 Updates Received 11,381 Disk Full false Invalid Store false Max Consecutive Errors 0 I have a fair amount of bookmarks too, and StumbleUpon also adds to your bookmarks so maybe that's related.
,
May 13 2010
Another clue: The problem had stopped, then I sorted by bookmarks. I also fired up Chrome from a computer at another location that is also synced. Now on the original computer, the problem has returned. Bookmarks manager just "flashes" without displaying any information. Accessing the bookmarks through the button (--bookmark-menu) works. Accessing bookmarks from chrome://bookmarks WORKS. Accessing bookmarks through the "wrench" does not. I have a large number of bookmarks and a large unsynced-count. ,
May 13 2010
There are a couple things going on here. The bookmark manager is a built in extension, called COMPONENT extension. It uses chrome_url_override to override chrome://bookmarks/. That means that when we navigate to chrome://bookmarks/ we redirect to chrome- extension://<bookmark-extension-id>/main.html. When we open the bookmarks from the menu we follow this redirect before opening a tab. This is so that we can reuse any possible open bookmarks tab. There are two things that can go wrong in two different ways with very different outcome but the UI looks very similar: 1. The bookmarks extension fails to get registered so the url override does not happen. In this case chrome://bookmarks/ never finishes loading. This results in a white page and spinner never stops. The CPU should not be busy and this should use no memory. 2. The bookmarks extension gets registered correctly and the URL override works but when chrome- extension://<id>/main.html loads it realizes that chrome.bookmarks is not available and it does a window.location.reload(). This results in high CPU and flickering of the page. I'll make 1 show an error message of some kind and I'll make 2 not reload in case the extension system is not working. That should make it easier to track down this bug.
,
May 13 2010
Definitely getting a CPU usage spike.
,
May 14 2010
That is very interesting new information, and I'm also seeing the second example where you get a large cpu spike, with difficulty in shutting the tab once you clicked on the menu item.

At least the tab going mad has stopped. Do you think this could be linked to a potential conflict with a chromium extension?

Jun 4 2010
OK, I found the chromium directory in ~/.config and renamed it and the bookmark manager worked fine. This narrowed it down to something in my profile so I tried extensions and I've narrowed it down to the following extension: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ahldefgplekckalfcolhhnljbbgaiboc Disable the extension and the bookmark manager works. Enable it and it doesn't work again. Given the extensions I use I didn't expect it to be the result of an extension, and I'm not sure how this extension is causing it.

Jun 6 2010
Build: 6.0.427.0 (49012) Ubuntu Lucid x86-64 I can confirm a similar (or same) problem: Opening bookmark manager shows page without any bookmarks, JS console shows: "Bookmarks extension API is not avaiable" etc. After an hour of messing around, here's what I tried and did not work: 1) disabling extensions 2) resetting Preferences via profile directory On a clean profile (everything removed besides "Bookmarks"), it works. On a clean profile with everything except "Bookmarks" and "Current Session"/"Current Tabs" removed, it does not work. When I close a few tabs from semi-clean state, suddenly at one point the bookmark manager starts working. (does not seem to depend exactly on which tabs I close). If I restart and reload the same session, it does not work again. After I open and navigate some tabs in a working bookmark manager state, it stops working again. (as a note, the huge amount of tabs (101) I have open maxes the process limit on startup) I can reproduce this from a clean install by applying my Session files. If anyone is interested, I can send them privately.
,
Jun 7 2010
I can confirm that that extension is potentially causing the problem on my system as well. When it is disabled the bookmark manager works. This is a new phenomenon though, as I have tested with all extensions disabled before with no positive effect. I will test with this disabled for the rest of the week. Is this only an issue with Linux versions? This error indicates that the renderer is not getting the message ViewMsg_Extension_SetApiPermissions message for some reason: http://src.chromium.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=chromium.git;a=blob;f=chrome/common/render_messages_internal.h;hb=HEAD#l731 Perhaps it is getting sent, but not in time. @erikkay, mpcomplete, does anyone want to take this bug off arv? It probably isn't his.
,
Jun 14 2010
I'll take a look.
,
Jun 16 2010
Thanks to the hint from @41, I believe this is related to process exhaustion. It appears that there are cases where an extension can get put into a normal renderer process. In that case, it never gets the extension's permissions, so it doesn't work. The code here is somewhat complex so I don't have a solution quite yet.

There is a problem in how the processes are spawned/managed in chrome? Or in the way chrome uses WebKit? It is easier hitting this behavior after some time that chrome is running and/or if the browser is overloaded. Similar issues I think is when we open URLs in tabs that doesn't loads properly the content (hanging in a blank page). Or also the history tab (same issue). If I kill and rerun chrome, then for a while everything works well. In my experience, this behavior could hang other applications. For example when I use Mailplane WITH chrome, and chrome starts to behave weirdly, Mailplane hangs in some WebKit code. BUT, if I find which tab(s) is in some way hanging all the processes, and I kill or close the 'guilty' tab(s), the bookmark manager loads properly. The history tab works well. Tabs resumes to load content. Or can be a WebKit issue...

With previous version of Google Chrome (sorry for not specify the actual release but it's 5.0.*) I had such problem randomly by either go to chrome://bookmarks or click to the Bookmarks Manager. I noticed that by only leaving opened a few tabs (3-4) the problem gone away. Now, switching to the version 7 of Google Chrome I'm not able to reproduce the problem anymore. Hope this helps, Claudio

,
Sep 30 2010
@erikkay 78 This is a horrible bug. Are bugs also influenced by the feature freeze?
,
Sep 30 2010
@82 - I see. Those may be mistakes. For those of you who are seeing this problem 100% of the time and with a small number of tabs, I believe you're seeing a different bug. One other variable to check is how many extensions do you have installed? One easy way to see if this is the same bug or not is to bring up Chrome's task manager. When this bug (43448) reproduces, what you'll see is that the bookmark manager tab will be listed together with a different extension or page (as if it was part of the same website or extension). If you see it standalone and not combined with other pages, then you're hitting a different bug and we should file it separately. If anybody here is seeing the second behavior, let me know. @84 - The reason bugs can be influenced by feature freeze is when their size and complexity is such that it's too risky to land after feature freeze.

I still have the problem with latest 7.0.517.44 on Windows XP. Entering chrome://bookmarks in the address bar doesn't work also. This results in a white page and spinner never stops. The CPU is not busy, so seems the bookmarks extension fails to get registered. After I disabled a extension: Google Mail Checker - Version: 3.1, it worked, and enable the extension, the bookmark manager broken again. Seems there are some conflict between this extension and bookmark manager.

7.0.517.44 (Official Build 64615) Here's a clue to the cause: This issue is directly related to the number of open tab/extension processes (the number of plug-in processes has no effect). 19 processes is the limit, past that (at 20 processes) the bookmark manager stops getting the chrome.bookmarks.
,

7.0.517.44 The easy way to repeat the error is: 1. Open 21 or more tabs with sites. 2. Open empty tab. 3. Open Bookmarks Manager. It is failed because of empty tab (or not loaded yet). If you close empty tab, Bookmarks Manager works.

I reported this as issue 65383 : blank bookmark manager, which was merged here. I am not seeing the flickering reported here at issue 43448 . I confirm behavior similar to comment 110. I reproduced the problem; then, I killed a few processes with the task manager; then, I was unable to reproduce the problem. NOTE: I did not close the tabs, simply killed the processes.

Hi, the problems with the Bookmark Manager still exist. For example sometimes it just doesn't show up like shown in the attached image. I'm using version 11.0.652.0 but as much as I know the problem has existed since 6.0.x or even earlier version. Sometimes clearing the cache seems to help, sometimes it doesn't. Some people get it sorted by uninstalling and installing again. Anyway, it's a very annoying issue and has been in existance for a long-long time, so I would think it's about time for Chromium/Google developers to stop being lazy/ignorant and sort it out! ;]

We know this issue still exists, and we plan to fix it. Unfortunately, the fix is complex and there are currently six bugs blocking it (see the left column). Please be patient; we'll get there. In the mean time, we know that this only occurs if the process limit has been reached, either because too many tabs are open or because too many extensions are loaded. As a workaround, try closing tabs and disabling other extensions until you see fewer than 10 or so processes in about:memory. (It doesn't need to be that few, but it will help.) If you still see the problem with very few tabs or extensions, please file it as a separate bug. I'm updating the title of this bug to be clear. Thanks!

How about bringing back the old native bookmark manager code (prematurely removed by Issue 38908 ) as a better workaround until the new bookmark manager is working properly? For me closing most of the tabs is not a viable solution since I usually have more than 50 of them and I don't really want to close them all.

Not sure if this adds to the body of knowledge around this problem or is repetitious. I just had the exact same problem but with the history tab instead of bookmark manager. I'm working on a Asus EEE with a 7" display so a screenshot doesn't show everything. Hopefully the info below a) displays better than it does in the message composition window and b) is useful. Let me understand something, please. Before (some time ago in the development) was 1 process for every tab, now more tabs runs in 1 process (one Renderer process)? Thank you
,
Feb 4 2011
Re: comment 133, we have always had a limit on the number of renderer processes we create. Once that limit is reached, we start to re-use them. Also, "1 process for every tab" is not accurate. You can read the details at: http://www.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/process-models
,
Feb 4 2011
Also, open a few tabs and then hit Shift+Escape to quickly see which ones are grouped, which is also helpful when trying to get enough processes closed so that you can open the Bookmark Manager. :)
,
Feb 5 2011
I seem to be also having issues with newly loaded extensions when having a decent amount of tabs open (besides not being able to load the bookmark manager) - does this bug affect *everything* that needs extended permissions?

Fix landed in r75498. Should be available in the next Windows Canary build (anything larger than 11.0.672.0). This doesn't take care of all the refactoring tasks that Erik filed, and I plan to get to those as well. The fix does ensure that extension pages won't end up in normal processes, though, which prevents the issue with the Bookmark Manager seen here. Gory details: We were trying to use a mostly-unused SiteInstance for extensions, but the SiteInstance had already been assigned a RenderProcessHost of TYPE_NORMAL. This meant it was possible for it to get grouped with other normal renderer processes where extensions won't work. Instead, we can create the SiteInstance earlier, when we know the correct URL and type. The downside is that it's still possible to create a process and then throw it away if a WebUI URL redirects to an extension URL (e.g., chrome://bookmarks to chrome-extension://). That's just a little extra work, though-- the page will still work. Further refactoring should fix that.

The problem disappeared after I re-booted my machine. Not sure if it was due to processing limit or an update that was already downloaded but not in effect until after shutdown. I do online research that spans multiple days and prefer to 'hibernate' rather than shut down (to speed up resumption of my work). When I have several Chrome windows with dozens of tabs open I don't like to shut down. I still think there may be some sort of bug in there but it seems an update already downloaded my contain the fix. I will send an update to this thread if it happens again. Thank you.
