GPU acceleration appears to make Chrome laggy

Reported by vangelis@chromium.org, Aug 8 2014

Issue description

Version: 36
OS: Windows

We have been getting a number of reports that after the update to 36, Chrome became laggy and slow. A number of users have reported that disabling gpu acceleration (either via the Settings page or running Chrome with --disable-gpu) seems to resolve the issue. We also have a few reports that updating the graphics drivers to the latest available also helps.

There is a chance that the performance issues are a side-effect of switching over to the D3D11 backend. This should only be enabled on NVIDIA and AMD/ATI GPUs (not Intel).

If you are experiencing performance issues after the Chrome 36 update, please help us collect the following information:
1. The contents of your about:gpu page
2. Whether performance is restored after running Chrome with --disable-d3d11

Blocking: chromium:395253

Comment 2 by Deleted ...@, Aug 8 2014

I was having really frustrating lagging issues with mouse events in Chrome 36. For example, clicking on buttons or clicking into text boxes produced no response until I moved the mouse over a different area of the page, at which point it would finally register that I had clicked something on the other part of the page.

With the help of comments on another issue, I found that the lagging problem went away if I disabled Chrome's hardware acceleration, or if I started Chrome with the flag --disable-d3d11.

Windows Update was saying that my display driver was up to date. However searching ATI's website directly did turn up a newer version that I have now installed. After applying this driver update I am not having the lagging issue even with hardware acceleration enabled.

I have saved the contents of chrome://gpu both before and after the display driver update.

chrome://gpu as per driver version 8.650.0.0 - https://docs.google.com/document/d/10MEeIYeL5tr4fX0TdCrPtWGy5itUPCri7yHyspujfJs/edit?usp=sharing

chrome://gpu as per driver version 8.970.100.1100 - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jyM5ovrDHDy6AKv2Sy3YXa7m3KFnEGpZ36PbLVeaPcw/edit?usp=sharing

As things seem stable for me now, I'll be sticking with the latest display driver, and with hardware acceleration in Chrome enabled.

Comment 3 by Deleted ...@, Aug 9 2014

My original summary of the problem (posted on Google Chrome Help Forum):

Problem with Chrome 36 which appears as a delay when typing or when attempting to select an item from a drop-down list. It appears that the screen display is always one step behind what the input (mouse or keyboard) is doing.
The problem occurs with Chrome and Opera but not with Firefox, Safari or IE11.
The problem can be cured in both Chrome and Opera by turning off hardware acceleration in the Advanced Settings menu or (better still) updating the display driver.

It appears that there is a problem in the events interface between the GPU, the OS and whatever low level functionality is common to the Chrome and Opera rendering engines.
If you look carefully at what's happening it's not a time delay rather it is an event lag - i.e. the rendering engine only gets the input event before last.
This is easily demonstrated with a drop-down list - your selection ('onmouseover' event) only gets highlighted when you move your mouse out of that element ('onmouseout' event).
Similarly, if you click a checkbox the 'tick' appears only when you move your mouse off that element.
The delay when typing could be a result of a key autorepeat timeout event 'releasing' the 'onkeypress' event.

I enclose 3 chrome://gpu dumps:

chrome___gpu1.pdf is the result from using the old driver when the problem occurs;
chrome___gpu2.pdf is the result from using the old driver with the --disable-d3d11 switch - works ok;
chrome___gpu3.pdf is the result after updating the dispaly driver - works ok;

Hello,

I am not sure how much help this will be, but...

I had Comodo GeekBuddy work on my computer today. They said that the Chrome files seemed to be corrupted, so they deleted then re-installed them and ran it in sandbox mode. I am not sure what that means, but I am type this message using Google Chrome.

In response to Michelle M.O.'s request:
- adding --disable-d3d11 to the chrome start properties seems to take of the issue: I can select the 'use hardware acceleration when available option' and the problem (lagging/delayed response to clicks) no longer happens.

As requested, the about:gpu settings are attached. One with the disable option specified and one without.

Disabling d3dll in flags did not work for me. Disabling GPU acceleration did work. However i would like to re enable it. Will there be a fix for this problem?

Attached are my Chrome://GPU screens for disabled d3dll and disabled hardware acceleration.

Indeed, adding the --disable-d3d11 to the shortcut fixed the issue for me.

This ATI mobility card doesn't have updated drivers, so a solution is needed (glad I'm not the only user with this issue).

Find attached chrome://GPU screenshots with and without this enabled.

It is not D3D11 specific. It happens on Linux too
Chrome : Version 36.0.1985.125
GPU : Intel Haswell
OpenGL Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Haswell Mobile

GL_VENDOR	Intel Open Source Technology Center
GL_RENDERER	Mesa DRI Intel(R) Haswell Mobile
GL_VERSION	3.0 Mesa 10.2.4

Only solutions so far is to disable

Input is lagging so much that afer typing , i need to need 3 seconds to get text appear.

@pasadenagene : The flag is --disable-d3d11  (de-three-dee-eleven) . Looks like you've replaced 11 by ll (el-el).

Thank you for the feedback. So far it looks like it's older (circa 2009) AMD drivers that are affects. There is a pending CL to switch back to D3D9 on these configs.

Requesting merge to M37.

1) Change has been on trunk since 9am PT Aug 14
2) Shipped in multiple Canaries since that time
3) No novel crashes in Chromecrash in my analysis
4) This fix is necessary to address issues causing severe lag for users with very old ATI drivers.

I have problems mainly with Scrolling pages and selecting text.

If I disable hardware acceleration, performance is OK.

My GPU drivers cannot be updates, because the Laptop vendor has locked it and no longer provides support for it.

Issue 403424 has been merged into this issue.

Comment 28 Deleted

Thanks for posting the work-around.
AMD does not have any updated drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 in my 2010-era Dell Zino sff desktop. Disabling hardware acceleration or adding the --disable-d3d11 switch fixes the issue, so I will go with the second option until the fix makes it into the next update.
I am attaching the about:gpu contents for using the switch.

Had this problem until I disabled hardware acceleration. Added --disable-d3d11 as well and wanted to post my about:gpu to help fix this for good:

This bug was an issue with older D3D11 drivers on AMD systems and is now fixed. The issue you're experiencing is something else, as you have an Nvidia system, and disabling D3D11 doesn't fix it. Could you file a new bug with a description of the behavior you're seeing?

Comment 39 by jul...@sroos.eu, Dec 6 2014

There may have been a regression of this bug. I'm seeing poor performance in flash on-line video with chrome 39.0.2171.71 m. Videos are unwatchable (5-10 fps)

I have a ATI 5430 gpu with the latest drivers according to the AMD website (14.9).

With --disable-d3d11 things still feel a little laggy but I get much better video performance with some flash videos (24-25fps with HD content from BBC iplayer). Perhaps my video card should be on the d3d11 blacklist?

I still see poor performance on videos using HTML5 and on youtube videos (even when forcing flash video) compared to playback of same content in IE so setting disabling d3d11 doesn't totally fix things.

Output of chrome://gpu attached.

@julien - This bug was very specific to bad behavior within these older drivers, and affected performance throughout Chrome (UI & page rendering included). Your issue definitely merits opening a new bug. It may be something in Chrome or ANGLE which can be investigated and fixed, or it might still be within the driver, which would require blacklisting. Could you open a new bug, and send the bug ID to me (shannonwoods at chromium.org) so that I can CC the right people for the issue? Also, could you attach the about:gpu without --disable-d3d11 to that bug?

Hello. I encountered a similar problem to Julien. The difference is I'm running a GTX 970...
When I enable hardware acceleration, there's +/- .5s delay of keystrokes and letters showing in chrome address bar or here where I'm typing the comment. Also, YouTube with HTML 5 has lots of stutters and lag spikes.

Disabling d3d11.dll, just like Julien, diminishes the lag but does not abolish it.
Disabling hardware acceleration however does abolish keystrokes and YouTube problem.

I face the same issue in Windows 8.1. Had to turn acceleration OFF. Though, it resulted in video playback issues.
GPU issue still present for me. It is manifesting on my Lenovo when onboard Intel 4400 is selected. Switching to NVidia 840M seems to solve the issue.
Just started experiencing this problem after upgrading to Windows 10. Running an AMD280x. Was working fine yesterday. Maybe its a problem related to DX12?

Attached is is about:gpu.

I am attaching the two related tickets that seem to be very similar (I've had the same issue as well, and while it has gotten better recently, the omnibox still lags for me). I don't expect this to be fixed, unfortunately, since code.google.com is becoming read-only on August 25: https://code.google.com/p/support/wiki/ReadOnlyTransition

Apparently this site won't let me post 3 links in a comment, so see the other tickets here (Comment #16)

i have the same problem with slow/unresponsive chrome, but difference is, i run the latest version of amds drivers, and im on linux, here is my output from about:gpu:
(i have to add that this slowdown is new it happened after i updated to m36, and i have not updated the drivers recently:

@firewalkerx: This was a Windows-only bug. The issue affecting you will have a different cause than this one. It's unlikely to get attention here, since this one is closed & not being watched by the people who can help with the issue you're having. Could you open a new bug with this information instead?

Blocking: 640939
apparently 3 years after this topic was opened the problem still persistst.

Have Windows 10 (incl. fall creators update) , the latest chrome build , (also portable and no extensions installed)

Have Hardware accel. enabled.
Positive : CPU usage drops down significantly from 15% to 4% when using youtube etc. at 1080p 60fps. vp9 codec

Negative (and instantly resolvable by turning off hardware accel.)
The time to render the screen from window to fullscreen takes up to 3000 ms, the overall response time is sluggish , page loading is sluggish.

Hardare GTX 980 M , I7 Skylake , 16 gb ram, all on a 960 NVME PCI Express Samsung SSD (up to 2gb/s of read speed)
