Put min/max/close on the left on Ubuntu Lucid (when it's configured that way)
Project Member Reported by evan@chromium.org, Mar 26 2010 Back to list
As in summary. We can query metacity for this info.

estade noted we need to put the spy guy on the right in incognito mode in this case.

I make this. Is only a mockup. But looks great.
Order of the buttons on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx: Close, min, max. (The same that Mac
OS X)

Here is another screenshot from Ubuntu Lucid beta2. Please note that in beta1->beta2
the button order has changed again. Now (since beta2) the buttons match MacOSX
completely.

We probably shouldn't do anything until Lucid settles down. ;)

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx is out!
The official order of the buttons are on the left: Close, Min, Max.
Comment 13 by mich...@gmail.com, Apr 30 2010
yes, this should be aligned with other applications, in Lucid it means left!
It is indeed a hassle in Ubuntu, i have Lucid installed and all my buttons are on
the left. Since i have a wide screen and most of my windows do not fill the whole
screen i have to constantly remember that chromium buttons are now on the wrong
side of the screen and that makes it troublesome to quickly close all my windows
when cleaning up my workspace, see attached screenshot.

I get the idea that the devs want it consistent throughout the whole platform, but
consistency in one OS preceeds that imho, since users normally only use one OS at a
time. And it now eats away at usability...

I would suggest to create another package for Ubuntu which should have buttons on the
left and leave the regular Debian package for the ones who like buttons on the right.

Would be good of course to have the buttons and the title to have colors and style
similar to Ubuntu's. They've managed to make it really good looking and refreshing
this time.

Just upgraded to 5.0.375.29 beta and it looks like devs are trying a more integrated
look on Ubuntu. Nice touch, Chrome doesn't look so prominently alien on Ubuntu.
However, must point out (no offense intended) Opera's new beta for Linux fully
integrates with Ubuntu desktop and launches just as fast.

@14 Actually, we care more about consistency with the host platform. We already use the mac osx button
ordering on OSX and intend to do the same on linux.

The reason this wasn't done for Mstone-5 all came down to timing of the Lucid release vs. the timing of Mstone-
5 stabilization.

GTK: Support Ambiance/Radiance and Dust button ordering.

When running under GNOME, read the gconf key that defines the button placement
and lay the close, minimize and maximize buttons out. This can even handle
bizarre combinations like putting the close button on the left and the
minimize/maximize buttons on the right.

When running under anything else, use the default button ordering.
