Touchpad stops working on Cypress devices

I'm looking into these reports.

Comment 2 by adlr@chromium.org, May 28 2014

Cc: bleung@chromium.org
I had a look into these and some more. There are a few things:

- We have some cypress driver crashes. According to the crash server, these are not higher than normal, so they are not a new problem.
- We have some pre-cypress systems here (alex, zgb). These are also very old and we have some issues with them from time to time, but we are no longer making changes, so it's unlikely to be a new issue.
- On many systems, I see hints of a poorly calibrated touchpads. These are likely due to the new firmwares we rolled out to provide frequency hopping. I think we'll likely need to roll these new firmwares back.

I will start the process. These new firmwares were for many systems, so there will be multiple CLs (at least one per affected board).

Personally I think that if we do roll these firmwares back, we should not roll them forward, and frequency hopping will simply not be something we ship on these devices. This is unfortunate, but it seems difficult to get right, especially considering that we can't reproduce these failures in our office. I welcome comments on this.
Did we roll out the new firmware with m35?
From c#2, kathrelkeld@, any strong indication that this is not a a pre-existing issue on previous releases? e.g not new with m35

Comment 4 by adlr@chromium.org, May 29 2014

Yes, we did roll out new firmware with 35
I have an enterprise customer with 700+ affected by this touchpad issue on Acer C720 (peppy). The devices are completely unusable and they don't have a M34 image to hand to recover.

- Video of issue: https://drive.google.com/a/chromium.org/file/d/0BxwhRkFpFJ1bd19fMnlMR1Y1bWs/edit?usp=sharing

Debug logs etc available on request.

Comment 6 by adlr@chromium.org, May 29 2014

Stephen, I'm sorry to hear this. I'm surprised that all the machines are unusable, given that we've not reproduced this ourselves. It could be something about their location. This is also a great time to tell them about the beta and dev channels as a way to try new releases before their entire fleet is impacted.

That said, I looked in the source tree and see the following boards impacted as described:

These are newly impacted in R35 and will be rolled back: lumpy, falco, peppy, leon.

This never got the new firmware: wolf

These got the new firmware before 35 and we didn't see issues, so we won't rollback: daisy, butterfly, parrot

I will be creating CLs now to rollback the boards as indicated above.
@adlr; Thanks for the prompt response. Glad to hear that the firmware update will be rolled back to address this issue. I'll let the customer know that a fix is pending and ask to verify once the CLs land

Comment 15 by adlr@chromium.org, May 29 2014

I've almost completed the verifications on R35. When those are complete, I'll push those patches.

I will then verify R36 and ToT.

Unfortunately we do not have an effective repro case for verification, as this appears to be a problem with environmental electromagnetic noise.

Comment 16 by adlr@chromium.org, May 29 2014

The four patches for R35 are marked ready and should be checked in by the CQ shortly.

Revert "chromeos-touch-firmware-leon: update to 3.9 firmware"

This reverts commit aeadf71ac8a82a9e40bca011546dfbc6ac19db4b.

We found that this new firmware was miscalibrating and making the
touchpad unusable.

This ebuild uses the version number 3.9-r2 b/c we need a higher
version number for the build system. It actually installs the older
3.8 binary.

ToT patches are in CQ
I think I've figured it out. It looks like there was an orphaned firmware in between the newest FW and the one in R33 that was abandoned quickly (presumably because it worked really poorly), so I'm going to revert back to the one from R33.
