I'm not one of the 5 users who submitted this ticket, but I've just upgraded to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8) and am having the same problem. I was on the dev channel, but thought downgrading to the beta channel might help, but had no affect. Here is what it looks like: http://screencast.com/t/cKinf80Ho

I am not using any themes. Here is my gpu info:

This seems to be affecting Win 8 users who have the latest Beta installed - can you take a look? Thanks!

benjbeadle@ do you get the pink hue only on the chrome://chrome/ page. Do regular URLs look ok?
The about:gpu seems to be from a machine with an up-to-date NVIDIA driver. Maybe we should contact NVIDIA to see what's going on. It seems likely to me that this is a driver bug.

Comparing the colors, I can't tell what's really going on. The mapping is very odd.
vangelis@ No, the pink hue is on every page/window. The notifications also are just a white box, although clicking the bell to view past reminders displays properly.

Ah, the driver bugs cometh :)

Yeah, let's get in touch with Nvidia.

at least the pink is so lovely :)
Two of the reports I see are Win 7. It would be great if we could get more copies of about:gpu from affected users. Are people reporting this on the forums?
I've asked ConOps to look for reports on the help forum for more about:gpus
I just wanted to update the issue to let everyone know GeForce has released a driver update which has fixed the issue: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/70184/nvidiaupdate

Thanks for everyone's help! I can see clearly now, the pink is gone!
There's about 23 reports of this problem in https://goto.google.com/6028719 . There's at least a couple that say that the problem goes away when running Chrome in Metro mode.

benjbeadle@ can you please attach the contents of your about:gpu page?
Thanks a lot of the update, benjbeadle@ . Looking at the release notes, this item looks suspicious for release 331.65:

[3D Vision]: Games are forced into red/green stereoscopic 3D mode after upgrading
the OS to Windows 8.1 [1355441]

Even though not all reports we get are from Win 8 (or 8.1) the description of the issue seems very similar to the symptoms that are reported here.
@vangelis, I uploaded my about:gpu page in note #5, but I've saved the page again and uploaded it below.

Thanks, @benjbeadle. Sorry I missed your previous attachment. Just to verify, it looks like you're running on a dual monitor setup?
Maybe someone with an NVIDIA card could try running chrome with red/green 3D mode and see if it looks similar to the screenshot.

FWIW just filed issue 325876 for a pink-tinge issue w/ Android dev-channel; not sure if it's related.

those of you seeing this, can you please go to about:gpu and attach what you see there so we can see what graphics drivers might be causing this?

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.
Hmm, both reports so far are on NVIDIA driver version 9.18.13.3165. Maybe it's just that version that's bad.
Best guess is that something is broken in the Nvidia 9.18.13.3165 driver. @kamikozy can you try updating your graphics drivers and see if that resolves the issue? Our hypothesis is that once we update to 9.18.13.3182 this will get fixed.
Comment 32 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
i've updated my graphics driver and the problem is repaired!
thanks for the help!
@kamikozzy - yay!

Do we know how common this driver is? should we try to find it and debug or just blacklist?
Comment 34 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
for some reason i couldn't update from the nivida control panel on my computer...i had to manually go to their website and update.
Comment 35 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
i'm using a gtx560 ti graphics card. i'm not sure how common that driver is.
Do you remember when you set up that card?
Comment 37 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
when i built the computer about a year ago. i can't remember the last time i updated the driver as i assumed i had it autoupdate but it appears that last update came out on nov. 19/13.
I found a list of old drivers for gtx560 ti on nvidia's website but it's all marketing numbers like 327.23, so I've no idea how that maps to 9.18.13.3182.
Comment 39 by kareng@google.com, Dec 6 2013
i'm seeing Driver 331.65 is r331_00-146, DriverVer = 10/23/2013, 9.18.13.3165

kamikozzy, when did you upgrade to Windows 8.1? That may have installed the new driver.
Comment 42 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
that was just a few days ago so that is most likely the cause. good thinking.
the pink hue issue took place last night. i wonder why it took a few days later to happen?

For NVIDIA the conversion between the official and full driver versions is quite straightforward. The official driver versions correspond to the last 5 digits of the full driver version. So:

  331.65 (official) === 9.18.13.3165 (full)
                              ^^^^^^

Updating Nvidia -driver worked for me too...
Comment 46 by Deleted ...@, Dec 6 2013
Hi all,

The same thing happened to my Windows 8.1 box about 36 hours ago now (dual monitors). Only Chrome affected.

Attached is a screenshot.

A reboot didn't fix it.

Chrome version 32.0.1700.41 m Aura

The NVIDIA GeForce driver was 331.65, and upgrading to 331.82 fixed the problem (just restarted Chrome, no reboot required).

Does anyone know what those errors in the GL log are?
I think some race conditions involving the destruction of pepper flash contexts. Nothing related to the pink issue at least.

Have same issue.
Chrome Version 32.0.1700.41 m Aura

Nvidia 210 driver 9.18.13.3165
@thezog does updating to the 9.18.13.3182 Nvidia drivers resolve it?

@thezog also can you post your full about:gpu info please?
Just got this gpu info from a user (on this thread: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/Hmher0X2vGs/nhk9EdW9UYkJ)

I have this exact same problem and haven't been able to fix it yet.
This is my about:gpu page:

pmvbabu@ this is a windows only problem. We haven't been able to repro in-house but for the time being we'll blacklist the one NVIDIA driver that's known to be problematic and see if we get more reports.

If you download the #17 recommended above (NVIDIA update) the problem is solved

I had this problem also, but it fixed pretty easy. I killed all the chrome processes and started chrome again. I am attaching my chrome://gpu data in case it helps.

Note: when I opened my pc and this issue happened my nvidia software toled me there is a new update (332.21)

I am having this problem as of today, and I updated my nvidia drivers earlier this morning. All was fine, until at a random time during today, chrome went pink, like all screenshots earlier.
Attached is my about:gpu. The nvidia geforce experience software tells me no new update exists, and I'm a bit wary about installing an 'update' from november last year.

Update to my earlier comment: I disabled "stereoscopic 3D" in my nvidia control panel, and restarted Chrome, and it's back to normal. I don't use this 3D option yet, but if I would want this in the future, I fear that my Chrome would be pink again. I suspect contacting nvidia is the way to go...

Both #63 and #64 are on the very latest NVIDIA drivers 332.21 (9.18.13.3221) . I wonder if the NVIDIA drivers regressed again. The last known good driver appears to have been 331.82. Tom.Muylle@ do you have 3D glasses hardware attached to your PC? I am not able to check the 3D option in the control panel unless I have the necessary hardware attached.
I used to have a screen that had 3D capabilities (now I have a regular screen attached though). I only have those glasses you get in cinemas, nothing fancy. Maybe it's because I have the right graphics card that supports the option?
Comment 68 by Deleted ...@, Jan 9 2014
Im having issues as well. Last night everything was ok, and today everything is pink.

I did the NVIDIA driver update and it solved this problem. It also updates the 3D, etc so for those having 3D issues may want to update the driver. Im pasting the link that #17 originally gave.

http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/70184/nvidiaupdate

Hope this helps.
I can see this problem as well, using NVidia 331 driver. As #65 has mentioned, the problem does go away when I disable the 'Enable stereoscopic 3D' checkbox in the NVidia Control Panel. It also comes back as soon as I re-enable that checkbox and restart chrome.
I don't have the IR Emitter for the 3D shutter glasses attached, and also don't have the projector attached that is in NVidias whitelist for 3D Vision, so the driver doesn't detect a valid 3D system currently (but I can enable/disable the stereoscopic 3D checkbox regardless).

(331.82 driver this is)
I wonder if we could use NvAPI to forcibly disable stereo on the NVIDIA driver. NvAPI_Stereo_SetDriverMode(NVAPI_STEREO_DRIVER_MODE_DIRECT) or something.
Thanks Tom.Muylle@ and stefan.fuhrmann@ for the tip. I was able to repro the issue as well by checking the "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" option in the NVIDIA control panel. I don't believe this is driver version specific as I can get it to happen with the latest drivers. I suspect the driver update just returns the checkbox to its default unchecked state which makes Chrome work properly again.

The registry information seems to be stored at HKLM/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/NVIDIA Corporation/Global/Stereo3D ( /GameConfigs/Chrome for chrome itself I'm guessing).

On my machine "AnaglyphEnabled" is "0xdeadbeef", whatever that's supposed to mean.
@jbauman, as long as that doesn't affect system wide settings. It's not uncommon (for me) to have a 3D bluray player software running, but chrome still open in the background. On top of that, there is a web player software (silverlight based) that does render stereoscopic 3D contents (3dvisionlive dot com). Apparently Youtube 3D videos also render via NVidia 3D Vision, never tried it myself though.

@vangelis, just to confirm, I just installed nividia driver 332.21. With that driver, I can't enable the stereoscopic 3D checkbox when the IR emitter is disconnected (different to 331.x). However, connecting the emitter and enabling stereoscopic, does again show the problem.

So we should probbly unblacklist the .65 driver and publish a known issue about compatibility with stereoscopic 3d, right?

Remove NVIDIA entry from blacklist

It turns out that it's not this particular driver which caused the pink
screen but rather a 3D vision setting.

I suffered exactly the same problem as originally stated. Upgrading the Nvidia driver as recommended right up above worked. Now the Chrome browser has returned from pink to its usual white colour.

Thanks for the guidance.
For those of you following along, we believe that the pink screens are not an issue affecting a particular driver but rather a side-effect of having enabled Stereoscopic 3D in the NVIDIA control panel.

If you are experiencing this issue, open up the NVIDIA control panel, uncheck the Stereopscopic 3D option, click the Apply button and restart Chrome.

Please let us know if the steps above are not doing the trick for you.

@vangelis
Yes! It worked fine for me.
I tried everything with the drivers but the pink curse was standing still.
Unchecking the Stereoscopic 3D worked fine in a second.
Thank You very much!

I came home to discover this problem today as well. But unlike most, I'm using Windows 7. Version 32.0.1700.76 m

You are right about the Stereoscopic 3D...disabling it fixed the problem.

Reported to Google this morning regarding the pink screen display on chrome..

Read this forum in the afternoon and down graded my Nvidia driver back to 331.65 instead of 331.82.

Problem solved all back to normal.. thanks to the forum...

also experiencing this on Windows 7. Unfortunately I do use the stereoscopic 3d functionality for gaming, so am having to constantly manually switch it on and off depending on what I'm doing. (well, only for chrome, nothing else seems to mind). I'm running dual monitors too.

Hei,

with:

Google Chrome Version 32.0.1700.76 m
Windows 8.1 x64

I've had this issue and after unchecking the 3D setting from Nvidia Control Panel and restarting PC/browser the issue was fixed. No more pink windows in Google Chrome.

Actually, this began only yesterday. First thought to be Google's idea to celebrate Pink Floyd memorial concert. The only change in my system has been an automatic WINDOWS UPDATE for 8.1-64 ... OF COURSE. A similar update erased a link an older version of Crystal Reports (Seagate) had. If you don't know it yet, win8.1 is a HATER and cares little what data or time you've lost as they try to tweak their way into productivity, as this money maker was released green w/bugs ... not your drivers!!!

I have Windows 7 x64 with latest nVidia drivers with stereoscopic 3d. I have observed same issue. Will I have to turn off stereoscopic 3d every time I want to use chrome? I am switching to IE 11.

I am Windows 7 and had the same pink issue. I just download the Nvidia update from the link provided in this thread and the pink disappear immediately after I install the driver.

Same here Win7 and few days ago I updated my NVidia to GeForce 332.21 Driver and today ( Laptop was running) and when I swapped tab on my Chrome it went Pink, Now if I close the 3D it goes back to normal but this is only on Chrome .

PS. where can I find the “Use hardware acceleration when available (requires Chrome restart)”?

update, Now I have conntect my TV via the HDMI and every time I start a movie/video clip the chrome goes pink, So I either turn off the 3D or turn it on in order to go back to normal. So it actually doesnt matter if it is on or off it seems....

It was working fine before the latest update of NVIDIA.

Any tips/suggestions/help ???

Worked fine for me. Thanks for the assistance.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I'm marking this fixed.
Its not fixed, just a couple of workarounds have been identified.

What if I want Chrome hardware acceleration and stereovision 3d both running?

Comment 96 by than...@gmail.com, Feb 11 2014
Have to agree with Paul above, the problem is unsolved.
And the interesting part is that I start a movie I click turn off the sterovision 3D and its ok ... movie is over I start second one and the pink is back so I have to turn it on now to fix the problem.

NVIDIA is working on a driver fix that should take care of this issue. There's not a whole lot that Chrome can do from its end (other than blacklisting the GPUs in question).

Hi,

I have a Windows 8 machine with a 36 inch monitor.
NVidia says the driver is up to date. version is 331.82
I have the display set to 2560 X 1600

On Windows 8 in the NVidia control panal how do I turn off 3D to remove this pink haze.
Comment 103 by Deleted ...@, Feb 25 2014
thank god i checked out the "Use hardware acceleration when available (requires Chrome restart)” and it worked out well hippy

Comment 104 by Deleted ...@, Feb 27 2014
Thanks Padma.. I uncheck the use hardware acceleration in chrome setting and it is working. No more pink haze.
To be quite clear, unless you really need to have stereoscopic 3D enabled, you'll be better off checking it off in the NVIDIA control panel (look at the screenshot in #65) than disabling hardware accelerated in Chrome. Hopefully this issue will be taken care of in an upcoming NVIDIA driver update.
Comment 106 by Deleted ...@, Mar 7 2014
I have the same issue. When i disable the Nvidia 3D everything is ok now.
I am use windows 8,1 as soon I unchek Nvidia 3d the problem is gone without to restart my pc
Fixed me, when I unchecked, "Settings -> Show Advanced Settings -> System -> Use hardware acceleration when available". Restart Chrome (not the machine).
And is reproduced indefinitely, by checking/unchecking & restarting chrome.
I do have NVidia & 3D on.

I use a Lenovo 530 with Optimus with a Intel HD Graphics 4000 (driver 10.18.0010.3496) and a NVIDIA Quadro K2000M (driver 9.18.13.3276) on Windows 8.1. I do not get the pink background, but I get the problem with the tabs/toolbar that is unreadable. It can be fixed by turning off the hardware acceleration. I also only get it on the monitor that runs the NVIDIA card, the built in laptop display, that uses the Intel card works correctly.
I also get the same problem with FireFox so it looks like an Nvidia driver problem.
The image shows a screen dump shows how it looks like between the displays.

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.
This morning I had the pink pages with Google Chrome using Windows 8.1 The Internet Explorer 11 worked fine. After searching and finding this helpful page I was able to fix this annoying problem. In Windows 8.1 I went to my System, Device Manager, Displayer Adapter. I use Nvidia GeForce GT 610 (Galaxy). I Updated the driver which was 9.18.13.3165. It searched on line and downloaded and installed driver 9.18.13.3523. I then rebooted the PC and all was back to normal with no pink pages. All settings I use in the Nvidia Control Panel are set to Default. Thanks for your informative link.

Pink screen problems in Google chrome! Grrrrr
Setting "Use Hardware Restart" to false in the Chrome settings fixed the problem for me. Running Windows 8.1 as well, heard it was an Nvidia problem (which I have).
Comment 116 by Deleted ...@, Apr 11 2014
Hey jporcena, can't find that "use hardware restar" on chrome or google search.
can you help us out?

Pink screen!! HELP
Comment 118 by Deleted ...@, Apr 11 2014
I've been using Chrome for years. Today (11 April 2014), my Desktop and Laptop are displaying pink screens. They are both running Windows 8.1. I do not (yet) have the problem on Chromium, running on my CentOS VM.

It makes the browser pretty close to unusable, since the pink background obscures the foreground.

I uninstalled and reinstalled. Before I could finish the re-install, Chrome displayed pink background. I had not yet logged into my Gmail account, so it's not related to synching up Chrome bookmarks, etc, across platforms.

I hate the thought of not using shared bookmarks, but the pink is intolerable.

If you can't reproduce it, please come up with a way to let users control the background color.

I tried the free color control app from the store, but it was ineffective.
Comment 119 by Deleted ...@, Apr 11 2014
The work-around for me was to uninstall Chrome and install Chromium. Same functionality, but no annoying pink backgound.
My chrome browser default color is now "PINK" PINK I TELL YOU what happened and how do I get back my white background pls help driving me crazy using Version 34.0.1847.116 m and it is causing web sites to appear abnormal
no theme being used
PS I have uninstalled and re-installed with same issue. The pink color just started yesterday 04/10/14. I'm using win 8.1 since version was launched
It's possible that NVIDIA pushed out a driver update that broke this again. For those of you who are experiencing this issue, can you please follow the steps in #78 and see if it resolves it?

Windows 8.1, it happened to me when I updated from 33 to 34.0.1847.116 m, attached is what I have for a GPU. Once I had turned of GPU acceleration it worked fine.
File didn't attach, 500 error? I can't seem to upload mhtml files. Anyway I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Comment 125 by Deleted ...@, Apr 11 2014
More about:gpu data, in case it is useful.

nVidia GeForce 560
Turning off hardware acceleration resolved the issue.

Does opening up the NVIDIA control panel and unchecking the Stereopscopic 3D option also do the trick or not anymore? Ideally you wouldn't want to disable gpu acceleration as things will get slower.

I had the same problem happened all of a sudden last night. I found this forum and followed the suggestion to disable stereoscopic 3D setting for NVidia GPU, then shut down and restarted chrome and the problem is gone.
Chrome 34.0.1874.116m and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
My question is - how did the Stereo 3D option get turned on - because I know this was disabled previously. Is this a malware issue?
Comment 130 by Deleted ...@, Apr 12 2014
down loading driver fixes the problem! http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/70184/nvidiaupdate

Comment 131 by Deleted ...@, Apr 12 2014
Instead of turning off ":stereoscopic 3D setting for NVidia GPU" or re-downloading the driver. etc

Changing the setting as “Use hardware acceleration when available" to off.

---------- How to Starts ----------------
Open settings, go to the bottom and select "Advanced Setting"
Go to the bottom - 3 or 4 lines up - uncheck Use hardware acceleration.
Shut chrome and reopen it.
---------- How to Starts ----------------

This suggestion is above in the posts already but without instructions.

Nvidia turned on 3d graphics starting this issue. ctrl-T is shortcut to turn the 3d graphics on and off but is not permanent.

Recommend also doing post #130 "down loading driver fixes the problem! http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/70184/nvidiaupdate "

I had this issue. Windows 8.1 nvidia video card. I should also note that some flash games would appear in 3D if using 3D glasses.

The solution that worked was:
1. Open Settings
2. Show Advanced Options
3. Uncheck Use Hardware Acceleration

I hope this helps others. It took me a week to figure it out.
Comment 133 by Deleted ...@, Apr 13 2014
Unchecking "Use Hardware Acceleration", worked for me. Thanks

Wonder how this got checked in the first place. Last Windows update was 3 days ago and colors have been fine until today.
Comment 134 by Deleted ...@, Apr 13 2014
Also, downloaded latest Nvidia driver for my GTX650Ti, can now use hardware acceleration.

Have experienced this problem for the past 3 days under Windows 8.1 since applying the latest Windows update. Fixed it now by going into controls and selecting Relaunch on Windows 8 mode". Has fixed the problem.

Comment 141 by Deleted ...@, Apr 15 2014
I am facing the same problem since past few hours, ONLY in DESKTOP MODE in win8. If I relaunch in Windows 8 mode it works fine. but if I switch back to Desktop mode, the problem still persist.
Comment 142 by Deleted ...@, Apr 15 2014
This problem started for me a few days ago exactly the same description as noted in this issue. I'm on Chrome release 34.0.1847.116 m.

When I had Chrome launch in Windows 8 mode, the pinkish cast was completely gone. Went back to normal mode the pinkish cast is present.

I've disabled extensions too and that did not help.
Comment 143 by Deleted ...@, Apr 15 2014
Ok - this was mentioned in the thread, I updated my NVIDIA driver to (for my system) GeForce 335.23 driver. This fixed the issue with the pinkish cast operating in non-Windows 8 mode.
I would venture to say that it's not an actual driver update that fixes the issue but the fact that re-installing the driver turns off the Stereoscopic 3D option. You should be able to disable it yourself straight from the NVIDIA control panel. Please look at comment #78.
Comment 145 by Deleted ...@, Apr 16 2014
"open up the NVIDIA control panel, uncheck the Stereopscopic 3D option, click the Apply button and restart Chrome."
...well... my problem is that I have not the "Stereoscopic 3D option" on my NVIDIA Control Panel at all... What should I do?
This is what my Nvidia control panel looks like with the latest driver version. Are you not seeing something similar?

...in my panel there is no "Stereoscopic 3D" sub-tree...
Perhaps I just have to install the latest driver... I do it and then update the thread...
thanks
Comment 148 by Deleted ...@, Apr 19 2014
OK - FIXED
Just installed latest version of the drivers and then verified the "Stereoscopic 3D option" unchecked.
Thank you very much!
Comment 149 by Deleted ...@, Apr 23 2014
this was a really easy fix for me..
No need ti disable anything. simply update nvidia graphics card..

Control panel -> Display ->
Resolution -> Advanced ->
Driver -> Update Driver.

Too Easy!!
Comment 150 by Deleted ...@, Apr 26 2014
Updating to the latest nVidia driver fixed the problem for me. I downloaded the drive directly off of nVidia's website.
Comment 151 by Deleted ...@, Apr 29 2014
I've got the same issues right after windows updating as attached pic.
Left pic is chrome and right one is explorer.

Windows 8.1 PRO X64 + NVIDIA GeForce + Pink Chrome browser.
updating the Graphic card driver did the job.
Thanks

I am using Windows 7 and also have the problem. I do also use Nvidia
Comment 159 by Deleted ...@, Jun 14 2014
This happened to me after enabling stereoscopic 3D in my display settings.

There was an option in the windows control panel, which disappeared after enabling, so to disable it I had to go to my NVIDIA Control Panel and disable it under the Stereoscopic 3D menu.

Have Wn 8.1 and latest Chrome as of 6 Jan 2015 with Nvidia 8400 GS card and tried updating driver using Control Panel and when that didn't work from Nvidia site. No difference, still got pink background. Gone back to Firefox. Increasinly disappointed with Google and don't even mention Android 5.
Comment 165 by Deleted ...@, Apr 1 2015
I was having the same problem as well. I was a new user to the specific computer, thus I wasn't sure about when anything was updated whatsoever. Luckily, I read this and went to the control panel, tried a few things out and found that, as least in my case, the problem is indeed NVIDIA. All I did was simply uncheck the box of "Enable 3D-image", and voila! Problem solved! Hope this would help all ya fellows out there! :)
Comment 166 by Deleted ...@, Apr 18 2015
#165 is correct. It did not work right away for me. I re-installed after disabling 3d-image. It was gone when I restarted.
