Issue 43544 has been merged into this issue.
Default sorting by name and putting directories first seems most intuitive to me.

Not sorting by Name, but by the 'Modified Date' is the most common use-case. Allowing users to sort by column-name will be really desirable, Firefox has it.

Closing old bug as obsolete. Please file a new bug (with details) if this problem is still occurring for you.
Comment 8 by jer...@nickurak.ca, Aug 10 2012
Is closing an old bug that's really a feature-request the intended process here? We can certainly file another bug, but I would have guessed that the point of closing old bugs was because they might have just evaporated in re-implementation churn...

As noted by pdknsk, this was actually fixed. Duping to the bug under which this was done.
