I understand your frustration, but just to be clear, Chrome is not changing the google.com webpage. This is a Google Search experiment you happen to be in that has nothing to do with Chrome code. Chrome cannot add an option or flag to change this behavior as it does not control the look and feel of the google.com webpage.

Comment 30 by Deleted ...@, Mar 23 2013

Please put it back as soon as possible. It was not distracting at all and I do not see how it could have been. This is REALLY slowing down my browsing speed. Google is my home page because I can quickly access my email, do a search, get to YouTube with the click of a button. Now I have to enter it in the address bar and it's a major inconvenience. To get it back I had to log out and stay logged out of google which is an even bigger inconvenience. I also don't appreciate the fact that I was selected when I'd much rather not be. It was fine before, Google was perfect and I just want it to stay that way.

Comment 31 by donaldn...@gmail.com, Mar 24 2013

I am shocked to discover that the disappearance of the black bar was INTENTIONAL. Yikes. I had posted about this "bug" on Google and a few others had responded, questioning whether there was an incompatibility with extensions. Obviously not.

You want feedback? That black band with the ability to select images, Gmail, translations, etc. is quite valuable. In fact, I've turned to use Firefox and Safari instead of Chrome as the black band still exists with those browsers. Obviously you seem to be contemplating removing it entirely. PLEASE DON'T. Without it I have to use bookmarks and other alternatives which are time consuming and inefficient. And the black band doesn't distract from Google search. That is ridiculous. Comment #30 has it right. And, if this isn't Chrome but Google, funny that the black band remains on Firefox and Safari, but thank goodness.

RESTORE THE BLACK BAND PLEASE. I use translation often these days and images constantly. I like Google but will find substitutes for Google search if you leave it off. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Comment 32 by Deleted ...@, Mar 24 2013

No, Chrome IS changing the google.com webpage! If I see this page with firefox, I can see the black bar. With Chrome, this bar disappears .... so ....

Comment 33 by Deleted ...@, Mar 24 2013

I have also found the missing black nav bar a bit perplexing in recent days. I actually began to wonder if my account got hacked because just two months ago Google notified me that someone tried to hack in from Europe and I had to change my account security. That's the first time that has ever happened to me, so it made me very concerned when the black nav bar went missing.

I found the black nav bar helpful and miss seeing it when I log in. I typically go straight to email and it does finally appear when I type in mail.google.com. This is only a minor annoyance. I use a number of Google services including Calendar, Drive, Maps, Images, Translate and Google+.

The psychology behind experiments like this is interesting; I just wish I had been given a little warning about the change.

Comment 34 by 20footd...@gmail.com, Mar 24 2013

Perhaps replacing it's function wouldn't go amiss but I'd be glad to get back a bit of screen real estate.

ps. we are using Canary here folks- it's doing exactly what it says on the tin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mine_canary#Canaries_in_coal_mines
Good that everyone's voicing their opinions but having done that there IS Chrome stable...

Comment 35 by nyerramilli@chromium.org, Mar 26 2013

Issue 222875 has been merged into this issue.

Comment 36 by michaela...@gmail.com, Mar 27 2013

Please bring it back or give experienced users the option to turn it back on. Experiments are fine, but unwilling participants need to be able to opt-out without logging out to restore this handy nav bar.

Comment 37 by redsnak...@gmail.com, Mar 27 2013

If you want the bar back you need to change your USER AGENT to chrome 25, google will remove the bar with higher versions.
To change USER AGENT get some extension to do that permanently since using developers tools to do that is only temporary.

Comment 38 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Mar 27 2013

Changing your UA to an older version of Chrome is likely to cause unpredictable and mysterious breakage down the road. I strongly recommend not doing this.

If you are uncomfortable with having your UI change periodically in sometimes-drastic ways, you can use the Chrome Stable channel, which is much more consistent. On the Dev channel, there are often experimental UIs that come and go.

Thank you all for bearing with us!

Comment 39 by gval...@gmail.com, Mar 27 2013

The bar is useful, allowing quick access to Google services from the start page.
An improvement would be to let the users arrange and add items to it.
Optionally some users may prefer a menu button to show the items, while other will prefer all items to be directly visible. There's a plenty of room on that blank Google page. A simple bar at the top side is not a distraction. As always letting users have a choice is good. Forcing them is bad.

Comment 40 by nagy.t...@gmail.com, Mar 27 2013

I am on stable, but the bar disappeared for me too.

Comment 41 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Mar 27 2013

That is also possible; keep in mind that these particular experiments are being run by the Google Search team, and can therefore show up across Chrome versions. The black bar is a feature of Google Search, not Chrome.

Comment 42 by nagy.t...@gmail.com, Mar 27 2013

Of course, but I didn't want to be a beta tester on this.

Comment 43 by nagy.t...@gmail.com, Mar 28 2013

On the URL below I get the black bar. Maybe others should give it a try:

Comment 45 by Deleted ...@, Mar 28 2013

Regarding #22. What impact does it's removal have? Are you people 12 years old? Google is less useful? I have to type more?

Now how about you help me with my experiment. The impact of putting a hole in the bottom of a bucket on the efficiency of using it to carry water? Alternately how about my experiment on whether pulling out all of someone's teeth has an impact on their ability to eat corn on the cob?

Comment 47 by Deleted ...@, Mar 28 2013

I am done with Chrome for a month and hopefully by then it will be back. I thought this was based off my Google account and that maybe I was just selected for it but I signed in on firefox and what do you know? It's there. This is Chrome not the Google homepage. And for the record, I downloaded the stable version. I didn't know canary even existed! I uninstalled Google and reinstalled stable just to be sure and it's still not there. Regarding comment #45, at first I miss read that but yeah I completely agree, it's OBVIOUSLY useful. Just end the experiment already, your results are these disappointed commenters that you forced this upon.

Comment 48 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Mar 28 2013

The Search team is running several experiments, which aren't necessarily tied to your account. The fact that you had the black bar in Firefox but not in Chrome is simply random.

Comment 49 by Deleted ...@, Mar 28 2013

I appreciate you replying back and I don't want to use Firefox (or any other random browser) but it's just a nice convenience that I need back. It's crazy how something so small can be so useful. I'll keep checking here for when you guys at Google conclude this experiment.

Comment 50 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Mar 28 2013

Yes, I definitely appreciate that it can be frustrating, and I'm happy to reply. I can't guarantee that there will be any particular update or information here about the experiment's conclusion, though.

Comment 51 by 4bra...@gmail.com, Mar 29 2013

Since this is a Search experiment and not controlled by chrome, those of you who wish to have the sandbar return would be better served sending feedback to the Search team. You can read about doing that here:

https://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2969341

Comment 52 by chbrooks...@gmail.com, Mar 29 2013

Black menu bar missing only in Chrome. Still appears in IE10..guess i'll be using IE till this is resolved. Really getting tired of these random issues that appear to only affect Chrome and not other browsers. A few months ago it was issues with Facebook and now its Google. Next time it will be?????

Comment 53 by Deleted ...@, Mar 29 2013

I'm using Firefox and the black bar is missing on the main Google search page. Bummer because that was my home page and I could instantly link to email, etc. Can't wait for something else to be implemented because as many have said - it is an inconvenience!

Comment 54 by Deleted ...@, Mar 29 2013

Using Firefox. I rely on the black menu bar. As others have said, its a pain to now have to access Gmail, YouTube, Maps, etc individually, bookmark them etc etc.. And why on earth don't you all give users of Google a notification that the menu is going away? Instead, I have to google where it went and come to this forum. I am also for having it be an option/ add on for those of us who want to use it even if others don't. Thanks.

Comment 55 by Deleted ...@, Mar 30 2013

Mine came back, don't know how or why, just did. Took two weeks though but it's back nonetheless.

Comment 56 by Deleted ...@, Mar 30 2013

i want the black navigation bar back, it was easy to use!

Comment 57 by Deleted ...@, Mar 31 2013

Didn't win the lottery last night but was "lucky" enough to have the black bar removed this morning, not. Guess I am 0-2....BRING IT BACK!

Comment 58 by ndo...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

What is the suggested workaround for this until the search team makes up its mind? Am I supposed to add links for all the services I use (maps/gmail/news etc) to my bookmarks?

In addition, if the search team is going to modify its look/feel, it would be nice to add a note to that effect in the search page. I understand that the purity of the search page is important to the team, but confusing the heck out of tens/hundreds/thousands/who-knows-how-many users is imo inconsiderate: just add a link to some page that explains what's going on.

Comment 59 by Deleted ...@, Apr 1 2013

I'm switching to another search engine if this isn't fixed! Some of my signins have the bar and others don't? The one I need the bar for doesn't have it ofcourse!!!

Comment 60 by gogo...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

If Google wants me to continue using GMail, they need to put that black bar back! If Google wants to me to use Google Maps, they need to put that black bar back! Same goes for images. WHY do they think it's a good idea to get rid of it? They can get rid of the YouTube tab. And the Play tab and Google+.

Comment 61 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Apr 1 2013

There will be a replacement for the black bar coming soon! It's not quite ready, but never fear, it won't be taken away with nothing else coming up to take its place.

Comment 62 by jerrgt...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

Yes I want the black bar back also it should have not been removed until there was a fix how dumb was that

Comment 63 by 7cher...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

Quite annoying not having back the black menu bar !!! I add some google links in my bookmarks bar in order to wait from the search team to restore the functionality but there is a great difference : when I click on a such a link, I loose text entered in the search area of the page !!! Quite awfull not to have this black bar indeed.

Comment 64 by Deleted ...@, Apr 1 2013

I'm so glad I finally found this page. I'm definitely reverting back. Without the black bar you have to "search" for the page you want or know the url. PUT IT BACK!!

Comment 65 by donaldn...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

As all these comments indicate, Google has been irresponsible in handling this exploration of potential changes to the black menu bar. While respondent #61 above, who appears to be part of Google's team, indicates that a "replacement" is coming soon, most of us had no idea that the disappearance of the black menu bar was part of an "experiment." Rather, we thought there was something wrong with our Chrome browser. I'm sure I'm not the only one who spent valuable time search for an "explanation." I created a problem entry. Only by chance did I stumble upon this "issue." Google was irresponsible in not informing us that we had been selected for a grand experiment. That is not being socially responsive or considerate of your loyal followers.

As to the "replacement," hopefully it will preserve the essentials of the black menu bar. At least some of the choices in that bar constitute searches, such as images or maps or even news. Being able to quickly sign into one's Gmail account on the search page is also invaluable. And I am one of those who does not see the black menu bar as detracting from any so-called "purity" of Google's search page.

Improvements in Google's search page as well as other aspects of Google and its products are fully appreciated and, of course, necessary if Google is to remain successful. We all appreciate that. But subjecting us to an "experiment" without even telling us was inappropriate.

Thank you.

Comment 66 by dtfi...@gmail.com, Apr 1 2013

This was a super annoying experiment, affecting users of other browsers too. Of course it's faster and easier to click a link than remember/guess and type a url. It's still hard to believe that this was done on purpose, and not by accident.

Comment 67 by shado...@gmail.com, Apr 2 2013

Change for change sake is stupid. The new planned menu is even less useful.

Comment 68 by Deleted ...@, Apr 2 2013

Black Menu 3.0 is wonderful! I was very upset losing my top nav bar...but when i found Black menu 3.0 i just love it!

Comment 69 by Deleted ...@, Apr 2 2013

-1 on team Google. Shame on Google for making changes for the sake of changes. Seriously, it is a menu bar, just leave it alone.

I've been using Google for 14.5 years, and this recent behavior by Google has for the first time shaken my trust in the Google mission. Similar to discontinuing Google Reader, this just leaves the user confused. I'm sure Google Fiber will meet a similar fate.

Perhaps I should try a Bing sabbatical and see how that works out.

Comment 71 by gogo...@gmail.com, Apr 3 2013

A little notice would have been nice, for starters. And now today, my gmail is changing? I might have to go back to the old days of AOL! Google+ has flopped and these changes are not making things any better.

Comment 72 by gogo...@gmail.com, Apr 3 2013

Look at the comments here Google:

http://discussions.latimes.com/20/lanews/la-fi-tn-google-gmail-popup-compose-furious-20130329/10

Sorry, but I do not know where else to complaint to Google.

Very frustrated and disappointed.

Comment 73 by Deleted ...@, Apr 3 2013

I have done this too! Bring back the black bar!

so what guys?? , its really become hard to navigate between Google services
u said u will implement new way and still nothing

Comment 75 by Deleted ...@, Apr 4 2013

Don't worry about fixing it, I already switched to firefox. Figured if I was going to have to bookmark my links might as well use any browser.

Comment 76 Deleted

Comment 77 by shananaq...@gmail.com, Apr 4 2013

Yes. I'll wait awhile for yous to bring the black bar back. It is most annoying to constantly have to switch to a new tab or do a Google search for Gmail, drive, maps, or YouTube. And when searching a subject it was always interesting to click on News, Maps, Images, YouTube etc. to see what came up automatically. I greatly appreciate experiments, but it is also nice to be informed so the response times are not prolonged and your information can be more accurate. Some people like to wait and see. :-)

Comment 78 by Deleted ...@, Apr 4 2013

Google I'm done with Chrome, don't tell me this is a Google thing because it's only on Chrome and it only happens when I sign in. This has been going on for a MONTH. Conclude the (not going to cuss) thing already. I am so frustrated at the lack of support over such a long period of time with so many people angry about this. I am looking for some type of add-on now for a work-around. This must be the longest experiment I've ever heard of. You've had a MONTH NOW.
p.s. It came back for two days only to go away again, not okay.

Comment 79 by gideonwald@chromium.org, Apr 4 2013

It's random whether or not you end up in the experiment in a given browser. A better solution is on its way soon, we promise!

Comment 80 by Deleted ...@, Apr 5 2013

I miss the nav bar, because I google images a lot. Please reinstal!

Comment 81 by Deleted ...@, Apr 5 2013

infuriating that this would be implemented before a replacement or alternative was available.

Comment 82 by kkdea...@gmail.com, Apr 5 2013

Now, I'd have to type in something like maps.google.com to go to Google Maps, since I'm so lost without the bar in place. I thought it was just my computer at first...

Comment 83 by parker.l...@gmail.com, Apr 5 2013

I used the bar to get to images and gmail quickly. Would be nice to have an option to enable it.

Comment 84 by Deleted ...@, Apr 5 2013

Bring back the Nav bar until you have a replacement. Back to FF until fixed. I use it too much and slows down performance looking for ways around.

Everybody CELEBRATE! I have been missing it for a LONG time...

Comment 89 by 7cher...@gmail.com, Apr 6 2013

I agree ! Happy now with the black bar back ! I confirm, if necessary, that it was not the browser which hid the bar but the google search page which tested the browser version. Yesterday with version 28.0.1466.0 (Build 192348), black menu was hidden and it appears this morning !

Comment 90 by Deleted ...@, Apr 6 2013

its still not there when you search for somthing in web or images

Comment 91 by kkdea...@gmail.com, Apr 7 2013

Version 27.0.1453.15 beta-m (Google Chrome)
The bar is there on the home search page, but not there on the search query results page.

Comment 92 by churchil...@gmail.com, Apr 7 2013

shouldn't you be rolling this out in canary and not the stable chrome release?

Comment 93 by Deleted ...@, Apr 7 2013

It's not back on Google.co.uk. Easy fix though, just use Internet Explorer.

Comment 94 by starbeam...@gmail.com, Apr 7 2013

2 things:

1. I do not see the black bar when I do google searches. Is this the same issue as described here?

2. You can get the bar back on the google homepage by appending ?esrch=<insert anything here except "Agad::Public"> - see http://searchengineland.com/new-google-test-remove-the-top-black-bar-126066

Comment 95 by Deleted ...@, Apr 9 2013

I feel I'm literally crippled on the Internet without that black bar!

Get your psychology experiment done quickly please! I hate to think of 'how' I may get to the next Google service. I just want to 'be' there.

Note: I suggest that you enable add and remove of shortcuts of services on whatever the new solution is. Like I use translate and Gmail, but never use News, so I'll have those services that matter to me the most the closest.

Comment 96 by gval...@gmail.com, Apr 10 2013

The bar seems finally back! Cheers!

Comment 99 by starbeam...@gmail.com, Apr 11 2013

I use as home page google.com/ncr (to "No Country mode"), when I go to that page with my gmail account, it hides the black bar and show a "apps" button, it takes me multiple clics to go to google translate (besides more loading time), very annoying. Instead if I use a incognito window, the same home shows the black bar. May be the "apps" button will be better if is always visible, and I can add any application I want.

I DO NOT...ABSOLUTELY DO NOT like the new google...
I searched for HOURS on my computer trying to figure out what I did wrong ONLY TO FIND OUT YOU ARE TESTING. This should have been made more public so I would NOT have freaked out thinking I did something in error.
PLEASE PLEASE put back the black navigation bar. Thanksssss a million

Comment 103 by Deleted ...@, Apr 26 2013

I wish to add my voice to list of frustrated users - please bring back the black bar. It was incredibly handy. It seems like a very poor way to do business, to deliberately annoy people who use your product. I wonder if someone has been called on the carpet for this. I certainly hope so.

Comment 104 by gazellej...@gmail.com, May 8 2013

I'm experiencing something related to this -- I'm using Chrome v.26. I have a few different Chrome user accounts for various jobs/ projects/ apps accounts, so I rotate between 4 active Chrome/ Gmail user accounts. All of them have the black bar on Gmail, Calendar, etc. (thank goodness its still there). However, ONLY on my main personal account, and ONLY on Gmail, the black bar is missing. It's still there for Calendar and Google Search, etc. It's still there on other my Gmail accounts in my other Chrome user accounts. But missing only the one Gmail account, of course, that I use the most. Any suggestions? Seems a bit odd to have the 'experiment' affecting just one product (Gmail) under one Chrome user account, and not the others.

Comment 105 by Deleted ...@, May 22 2013

My black bar keeps disappearing every time I try to search something. Help :(

Comment 106 by kkdea...@gmail.com, May 23 2013

As of Google Chrome version 27.0.1453.93 beta-m, it's back for me! Hooray!

Comment 107 by dsands...@gmail.com, May 31 2013

You want feedback - Having the black bar with news, maps, etc is ESSENTIAL to have on your homepage. In fact, I can't imagine anyone wanting to get rid of it. Why would you do that? Why? Seriously. It's so inconveniencing.
I have had google.com set as my homepage for years, so it's habit for me to hit "home" button and then proceed to news, maps, etc. This is often done while not logged into gmail, in case this is a login sensitive UI thing.
It just makes sense. If your experiment was to see how frustrated people get with your changes, you've succeeded. Enough with the pointless "experiments".

Comment 108 by Deleted ...@, Jun 5 2013

Version 27.0.1453.110 m

Bar is gone again for me. Not very happy.
27.0.1453.110 This completely sucks, I use a lot of Google services and the menu bar was a Godsend... Now there is nothing even in the stable... this to me is a backward step as it appears to be for a lot of users. Give us the choice to have it on or off, or come up with a better solution very soon please.

Comment 110 by 7cher...@gmail.com, Jun 10 2013

Quite surprising indeed !!! Since April, the 4th where I put a comment indicating that the black bar was back with chromium version 28, I never lost it (in fact the problem is not in the browser but in the google page which tests the browser version.

Currently, I am using 29.0.1532.0 (Build 204932) and black bar is still present happily (I download weekly recent build from http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?path=Win/)

Comment 113 by retiredm...@gmail.com, Sep 19 2013

I sure would like to have my black bar back. It was not a good idea to remove it without requesting it since it makes navigating so much easier.

Comment 114 by samarth@chromium.org, Sep 20 2013

Hi folks, this is not a Chrome-specific change but a Google-wide change that's in the process of rolling out: http://insidesearch.blogspot.com/2013/09/updating-google-bar-many-products.html. You can still get to other properties using the link in the upper right.

Comment 115 by Deleted ...@, Sep 21 2013

This is madness! I want the black bar back for google chrome and if I don't get it I will switch permanently to firefox.

Comment 116 by Deleted ...@, Sep 21 2013

Noticeable negative change. I kind of liked the black bar compared to the clickable little grid.

Comment 117 by starbeam...@gmail.com, Sep 21 2013

The black bar does not fit in with the white background, IMHO.

Comment 118 by Deleted ...@, Sep 22 2013

Missing the black bar -- and it took me reading these posts to realize that the "9 boxes" was the dropdown for the apps... which takes up WAY more space than a small black bar. WTF?
Hey, Google, when you make a change this dramatic, how about a Heads-Up to the users?
How about making an account setting flag: "Nav bar / Dropdown"?

BTW, this also only affects my Chrome browser; the black bar still appears in Firefox.
