Make channel mixing checks explicit.

The existing checks were not strong enough and would pass

How long do we have to wait for the next stable update. I hope we don't have to wait until version 24

Just to let you know, I'm not sure if the problem is flash specific. Just today, I wanted to have a go at jamwithchrome.com, and after many hours of no sound, I managed to fix it by changing my settings to stereo. I initially thought it was issues with the web audio api, but I came across this, and changed it. Now my jamwithchrome.com works fine, and I'm pretty sure that doesn't run with flash.

Comment 22 by Deleted ...@, Nov 9 2012

I spent 3 hours with this problem!!

Comment 23 by Deleted ...@, Nov 9 2012

Yes, this happened to me this morning when Chrome forced an auto-update on me. Yes, I am using quad speakers. NOTE HOWEVER: going to plugins and disabling then en-abling Flash gets sound working again for a short time. I'm assuming that Chrome or the Flash plugin checks something periodically and re breaks things.

Comment 24 by Deleted ...@, Nov 9 2012

I'm using Bootcamp on my macbook and when I put my sound on stereo then the sound will only come from one side and whit very bad sound
Issue 160200 has been merged into this issue.

Comment 26 by Deleted ...@, Nov 10 2012

I'm having this issue also specifically with YouTube and videos on the FoxSoccer.com web page. These web pages play properly in FireFox v16.0.2. I have a Creative SB X-Fi sound card with a 4 speaker setup. When my speakers are set to quadraphonic there is no sound when playing videos in Chrome. If I close Chrome and change the speaker settings to stereo the audio is played correctly.

i have quad setting also have no sound even if i change settings

Comment 28 by ther...@gmail.com, Nov 10 2012

workaround for me: switch to 5.1 stereo, disable the subwoofer and center channel. I also upped the audio quality in one of the many audio dialogs to max in the sound control panel.

I also have this problem but I believe the problem is not only linked to quadrophonic sound. Plugging in my usb DAC (fiio E7) seems to cause the problem and when I unplug the DAC the speakers stop working. But unlike others neither my laptop speakers or usb dac are set to quadrophonic or even have the option to. Like comment 12 above closing chrome then opening it again sometimes fixes the issue.

Well I also have this problem of no sound in videos using Chrome. IE works fine. My sound is set to quadraphonic and I am unable to change it to stereophonic. When I try it says "Format not supported by device". I use stereophonic speakers (Creative Inspire 280) and Realtek HD Audio Manager. So I can't get any audio in Chrome at the moment. Is there a way I can downgrade to the old version of Chrome or does anyone know how I can force my computer to go stereophonic? Thanks for any help!

Changing to stereo solved problem after upgrade

Comment 39 by Deleted ...@, Nov 12 2012

The upgrade of Chrome to Version 23.0.1271.64 m has resulted in no sound being played by videos on youtube etc. Using RealTek HD Audio Manager, switching from Quadraphonic to Stereo and initiating a new video playing on youtube (without reloading that webpage or restarting Chrome) results in audio working once more.

I have this problem but it only manifests when I switch to or from bluetooth audio.

Start Chrome w/o bluetooth, it works; enable bluetooth, it goes permanently silent.

I can't believe they let a problem like this slipped by.

They better fix this issue asap or I'm switching back to firefox.
@kareng, are you talking about the release that's not due out until almost Christmas?

Comment 46 by kareng@google.com, Nov 13 2012

cmonster67, nope it's coming with the next stable push. in a few weeks. well before christmas :)
@kareng: I'm a simple guy who has always had trouble counting past "a couple." Sometime "a few" means "three" and other times it could mean "thirteen." With Christmas being only six weeks away, how many weeks are actually "a few" in this case; three, four, five?

I'm joining cmonster on this one: "in a few weeks" is a rather vague estimate. Do you realize that many computers and laptops nowadays work with different default speaker configurations other than stereo? My laptop is a MacBook Pro (and yes, I use Windows because I'm a developer on that platform), and the default configuration on that is quadraphonic because this laptop actually has an internal subwoofer in addition to the standard left-right speakers that gives more thickness to the sound. I know of many other (non-Apple) laptop brands that do the same. IOW: switching the configuration to stereo is not an option for me, because then although there's sound output on Chrome, the sound quality is horrible - for everything, not just Chrome.

What I'm saying with all this is that this problem affects far many more people than you think - it just so happens that the symptom is so elusive (from google groups postings, it took an entire day for people to figure out the problem was on Chrome, and not Flash) that you're left with the impression that the people here are just a vocal minority and there's nobody else out of here with this problem. So ideally, the update with the fix for this issue should have been pushed _already_, because as far as I and people here and many other people out of here are concerned, Chrome is currently broken for consuming media.

I'm sorry for the long rant, I'm not even mad at the devs actually (3-4 days to fix the issue is quite good for such an elusive bug), I'm more pissed at the notion I'm getting here that this is not a high priority bug.
For those of you who are still having trouble after switching your audio to stereo (and those who don't want to switch from quadraphonic) can you try running Chrome with the following command line flag:

--disable-audio-output-resampler

Help on how to add a command line switch can be found here:
http://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/run-chromium-with-flags
http://youtu.be/THO2aunlVas

Adding this flag will cause Chrome to use an alternate audio path which should have been happening automatically if your audio configuration is not supported.
@dalecurtis: Thank you - using that switch does allow proper sound output. It's not ideal, but at least it's a viable workaround (as opposed to switching speakers config to stereo) if we're really going to have to wait until december for the proper fix.

Comment 53 by rev.c...@gmail.com, Nov 14 2012

@dalecurtis - works! Might keep it. Don't like my browser mucking with the audio stream and introducing latency.
@rev.chip I believe your issue is actually issue 153056 which should be fixed in M24 (you can try switching to the beta channel if you like).

Those of you with multichannel setups might also want to try switching to the Chrome M24 beta channel where Chrome has support for a much larger set of multichannel configurations and better support for device hot swapping.

Note: Using the --disable-audio-output-resampler switch actually increases your audio latency, not the other way around. AudioOutputResampler allows Chrome to use Window's WASAPI audio path (introduced with Windows Vista) instead of the much older WaveOut interface (introduced with Windows 2000 and emulated on Vista or higher).

Comment 55 by rev.c...@gmail.com, Nov 14 2012

@dalecurtis - OK, thanks for the detail. I'll try it both ways when the bug is fixed.

Have successfully been able to get sound working with the provided command line flag. This has only started happening for me today, unsure of when my Chrome browser last updated (would be nice to have that information on hand, and go back to the non-auto updating, or at least a quick method of rolling back an update in case something like this happens again)

Given this is a workaround, is there a permanent fix being worked on to put in place?

With no response on when the fix will be released I did some digging. I've yet to find the date but I did find something very interesting. It seems that videos within Google's YouTube channel play just fine with audio without changing Chrome's configuration. Interesting...

Comment 60 by Deleted ...@, Nov 15 2012

@cmonster - The Google Channel on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/Google) does not play any sound for me using default settings. Sound is enabled when I set sound to stereo or use the command line flag "--disable-audio-output-resampler"

@pkmindworks, had you used the "--disable-audio-output-resampler" flag prior to channel? I haven't used at all and the Google channel is oddly still the only thing that received audio through my browser.
Possibly html5 videos are working for you and flash videos aren't (or
vice-versa). Youtube serves up both depending on the content and
browser.
Good call; I had completely forgotten about html5. That's what's working.
When I try HTML5 video the sound works and then also flash sound works.
After I plug USB headphones flash sound doesn't work, but when I try again HTML5 video the sound works and also flash sound works.
After I unplug USB.... sound doesn't work, but .... sounds work.
I think you got it.
I don't have quadraphonic setting in my system, so can't verify the fix.
Further to my previous comment #58, I have checked on my work laptop and the Chrome/Flash version is the same, yet i have yet to experience the same issue of no sound. Have confirmed with various flash based websites and sound works fine?

@siedeen, I'm not sure if Google realizes how widespread this is. Just today I was copied on a mass email from a content provider who received access complaints from Chrome users. The provider's suggestion to their customers was for them to use Firefox or Safari and provided links to install the programs.
Definitely have heard of the issue across a number of websites - all other browsers work fine, but Chrome/Flash have sound issues. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling Chrome, deleting everything, etc, but no go. I'm running BootCamp, and the funny thing is that it doesn't work on Windows OS, but it does work under the Mac OS. the response time for this fix is unacceptable, this is not google like at all. still having this problem... back to firefox for me.

Comment 71 by Deleted ...@, Nov 17 2012

Just hear to add my voice so it's clear how widespread this problem is. Switching to stereo is a fine work around, but I'd like very much not to need the work around!

Comment 72 by Deleted ...@, Nov 18 2012

I have been having the same issue. The comment under Comment 51 works though. Not sure what that does but it fixes the issue. Thanks!
I sent in a bug notification about this over a week ago and got absolutely NOTHING in return. I am using a quadraphonic sound system on Windows Vista. Switching to stereo fixed it, but that defeats the purpose of having 4 speakers.

I have the same problem, no sound from my speakers when playing something in Chrome. BUT, when I plug my headphones in, it works just fine. I'm feeling more certain that if a real solution is to be made available as a release, it will not be made available until almost the end of the year. There's no indication from Google as to otherwise.

I've had this issue for a few weeks now. What's odd is I didn't have any issue with speakers set in Quad channel till I updated my chrome. My flash info:

We have just released an update to Chrome 23 (latest version: 23.0.1271.91) that has a fix for this issue.
For those of you who are affected by this issue, can you let us know if audio returns when you update to this version (Chrome menu > About Google Chrome > click the Relaunch button), and switch back to Quadraphonic.
@sied

The update fixed it for me!
OMG!!! LET THERE BE QUADROPHONIC SOUND!!!!!!
Status: Fixed
@Dale, users on Beta (version 24) are still reporting this issue. Is there a different fix for 24, or does this CL need to be merged to 24 too?
M24 doesn't need this CL. If there's a problem, it's different than this one since the original code is not present in M24 any longer. Can you point me to the reports?

Comment 97 by Deleted ...@, Nov 27 2012

The update fixed this for me as well.
Thanks Chrome team!

Comment 98 by Deleted ...@, Nov 27 2012

Updated Chrome, and checked quadraphonic settings as requested.

Content will play in stereo through front 2 speakers when set to quadraphonic. Not playing on back speakers, whereas same content on IE plays through all 4 speakers. Almost fixed it I guess.

Onboard Audio driver is Realtek 6.0.1.6151
I tried to update to the latest fix but Chrome told me the update failed.
Thanks for clarifying Dale. If the original code is not present in M24, then the user who is still reporting this must be seeing a different issue. We will track the Beta reports separately and open a separate crbug if it turns out to be an issue.
Still have this problem when I plug in the usb headphones.
Audio on HTML5 is working good on chrome and flash is good in IE9.
The problem is only for flash audio on google chrome.
So it must be problem with chrome.
Is it goodbye to chrome after so many year?

Issue 162497 has been merged into this issue.

Comment 103 by Deleted ...@, Dec 7 2012

Updating Chrome seems to have fixed the issue for me. YouTube videos now have sound when my speakers are set to Quadraphonic.
Sound on youtube is a bunch of clicks and the video seems to play faster. After some time, the sound goes back and video goes normal. If I stop the video and start it again (play button or click on the video screen area) the problem sometimes reappears. I don't know if it is a related issue, but has appeared after the chrome upgrade.

I have experienced the same problem with Chrome and Chromium, but I'm on Ubuntu X64 12.10. Sound worked fine up to some 23.x version, but after upgrading to 24.x today, all sounds stopped working in Chromium (and Chrome some weeks ago). I downgraded Chromium to 22.x version and sound worked again.
