Issue 152889: Print preview not working, blocking print on Windows XP for Asian websites

Reported by, Sep 28 2012 Project Member

Issue description

Chrome Version : 22.0.1229.79m
OS Version: Windows XP SP3 (Japanese)
URLs (if applicable) : reports mention gmail, confirmed on various Chinese, Japanese and Korean websites.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. With a Windows XP machine (possibly Japanese x SP3) go to
2. CTRL + P

What is the expected result?
3. Print preview comes up and you can print

What happens instead?
4. Print preview never comes up, you can't print (no response), closing the print preview will leave the page darkened and unresponsive.

No issue when doing the same steps but with an English website on the same machine.

Even more intriguing, if you do the following then AFAICT everything works fine:
1. Launch Chrome
2. Go to an English website (e.g.
3. CTRL + P
4. Print preview loads
5. Close print preview
6. Go to a Japanese, Chinese website (e.g.
7. CTRL + P
8. Print preview loads

I am marking this as a P1 for M24 with the hope that we can get a reasonably safe patch in time for 23 stable.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if

Additional user reports:
 - the workaround does not work reliably
 - one user is saying that he fixed his issues by changing the font settings (from MS P Gothic to MS Sans Serif).

Comment 4 by, Oct 2 2012

Why is it marked as regression?

Reproducable only on chrome build with
set GYP_DEFINES=branding=Chrome buildtype=Official

even set GYP_DEFINES=branding=Chrome works fine

Kareng: this is affecting a significant number of users including Business customers. It used to work on Chrome 21 and the change seems rather small and low risk. Can we merge this to M23?

AFAIK, it's in 24 but not in 23 hence the merge request.

Thanks so much for fixing this (and putting back the label).

Feedback from one user using the latest Canary:

Print preview is taking quite a long time to show up (3 minutes for the first page, 9 minutes to finish all pages).
If save as a PDF, opening the resulting file will show an error that roughly translate to "T3Font_1's width is incorrect".

Page used:

Any idea of what's going on for these 2 remaining issues?
Should I file a new bug for the second issue or is it related?

Comment 21 by, Oct 22 2012

Please file separate issue for PDF and please attach PDF.

For 3,9 minutes please provide exact Canary version number and any other available information. I can't reproduce this issue with my setup.
