Support sites using EOT fonts and font encoding with the on-the-fly transformation to Unicode with an extension

Project Member Reported by js...@chromium.org, Jun 22 2009

Issue description

This is to just keep this in our radar. It's been filed in the upstream a
while ago. See https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22339

Issue 14290 has been merged into this issue.

Comment 2 by js...@chromium.org, Jun 22 2009

issue 1526 is about supporting EOT directly, which we decided against.

To Glenn: Just FYI, all these duped bugs are potential targets for evangelism. All of
them use 'font-encoding-hack' instead of the proper Unicode. They should switch to
the real Unicode. :-).

Thanks Jungshik.

We will still need to reach out to these sites and ask them to fix their encoding, so
we may want to tag all of them with a label. Maybe 'EOT' or something?

Comment 21 by js...@chromium.org, Jun 30 2009

Summary: Support sites using EOT fonts and font encoding with the on-the-fly transformation to Unicode
Glenn, I'll mark them with 'eot' label.

BTW, I have to tell you that these sites are not "easy targets" for two reasons.

1. According to my limited and *indirect* experiences, it's rather tough to convince
them of the need.

2. Even if they're convinced, it may not be easy for them to switch quickly. It appears
that they need to go through an overhaul of their CMS. Apparently, most of these
sites (Indian newspaper sites) use rather old versions of DTP tools and have in-house
tools convert the output to HTML

In short, it'll take quite a while for them to switch.
That's why we have https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22339 and this bug to
support those pages with 'font encoding hack' in the meantime.

erikkay mentioned to cira that phajdan.jr had been doing something for this issue (or
webkit bug https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22339 ).

phajdan.jr : do you have a separate bug tracking the issue?

Hmm. I don't remember saying this. I suggested the text-transform CSS solution to
another similar problem (which to be honest, I've forgotten which one it is) since it
had come up before (in this bug), but I didn't mention that anybody was working on it
(no clue if anybody is).

Comment 37 Deleted

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it's strange because this bug hadn't been
updated and I couldn't find any other bug. Somehow, cira seems to have misheard you :-).

BTW, the context in which you brought up text-transform and this bug was how to
localize strings embedded in html for extensions if I remember correctly what cira
told me.

Ah, right. That makes sense.

Padma (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/873 ) is a Firefox extension that
handles this issue. We can consider this route as an alternative to adding the built-in
support to Webkit. I thought I had added a pointer to Padma here, but haven't.

Refer issue 39614 raised by me which has now been merged here.
Note that I have not installed any extensions in FF. I am running the default
install of FF in Ubuntu-Karmic now upgraded to Lucid. The website displays fine. As
stated earlier I have no issues in IE and Chrome when running under WindowsXP.
Note again no such extensions installed in IE8 or Chrome(stable version).
Trust i am clear.

I should add some comments on this issue. I wrote Bengali support in Padma plugin (Firefox) but I strongly believe that we should try to solve this problem at its root.

In response to the comment in #21: these websites need NOT change anything in their workflow. They can create a Unicode version of their websites on-the-fly simply by putting a conversion script. So they may continue to use their current set-up internally.

As an example, recently we launched a petition site with a live Unicode proxy for Anandabazar Patrika (ABP), the largest Bengali daily from India,

http://anandabazar-unicode.appspot.com/

Google News India also uses similar conversion methods for many of these websites. I should also mention that at least six leading Bengali dailies from Bangladesh have switched recently to Unicode. So things are changing in positive way although bit slowly.

To solve this problem what we need is some advocacy. Google India could help by writing letters to their bosses. Its often the case that their technical staffs are happy to maintain the status quo, unless they get a nudge from the top.
